Microsoft Reports Explosive Growth in Deployments Of Internet Information Server

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 15, 1996 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that Microsoft® Internet Information Server (IIS) is the fastest-growing Web server on the Internet. Customer acceptance and industry investment indicate continued growth for IIS and the
Windows NT Server network operating system on both the Internet and corporate intranets.

More than 150 of the Fortune 500 accounts are standardizing on IIS for their corporate intranets. Results just released from Netcraft, a Web survey organization in the United Kingdom (http://www.netcraft.com/survey/) , show that for the last three months, Microsoft Internet Information Server has sustained the fastest rate of growth of any Web server on the Internet, increasing by an average of more than 50 percent per month. In September, the number of Web sites on the Internet running IIS increased by more than 14,000. Examples of organizations deploying IIS for corporate intranets include Compaq Computer Corp., Continental Airlines Inc., General Motors Corp., HarperCollins Publishers Inc., Merrill Lynch & Company Inc., NASDAQ, Pennzoil Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

“We’re currently migrating all our Web servers from Sun and Netscape to Windows NT Server and Microsoft Internet Information Server,”
said Guerry Waters, manager of technology planning for Southern Co.
“Internet Information Server provides the most complete solution for both our corporate intranets and our Internet site.”

To meet customer demand for intranet and Internet solutions based on IIS and
Windows NT Server, Microsoft and the Microsoft channel have trained more than 13,000 IS professionals and over 1,200 solution providers in setup, management and administration of IIS 2.0. More than 40 OEMs are now offering Microsoft Internet Information Server, and more than 75 ISVs are now creating IIS-based applications.

“We are experiencing huge demand for our training course on Internet Information Server,”
said Lars Laakes, chief technical officer and partner of ObjectArts Inc.
“Internet Information Server and Windows NT Server provide a complete, integrated solution for corporate intranets. As a result, we’ve dramatically increased the number courses on IIS to meet demand for both solution providers and IS professionals.”

Microsoft Internet Information Server version 2.0 is included at no extra charge with Windows NT Server version 4.0, which is priced at approximately $1,129 for the new 10-user version. Customers with previous versions of Windows NT Server can upgrade to version 4.0 for approximately $539 for the 10-user version.
