Microsoft Announces Acquisition Of Panorama Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) Technology

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 29, 1996 — Microsoft Corp. today announced its acquisition of multidimensional Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) technology from Panorama Software Systems of Tel Aviv, Israel. Panorama’s high-performance technology is based on a three-tier multidimensional architecture designed to support online analytical processing, enterprise information systems and decision support applications.


Panorama’s products have the capability to seamlessly integrate data stored in multidimensional databases with data residing in relational databases such as Microsoft

SQL Server
™
, maximizing performance and scalability,

family of products will give customers a full suite of products for easy and effective retrieval and analysis of enterprise data. The open interfaces we will create will be of great benefit not only to our customers but to many players in the database business.

The inclusion of multidimensional functionality in Microsoft products will also complement the offerings available through Microsoft’s recently announced Alliance for Data Warehousing. Microsoft is currently working with the alliance members to build the Active Data Warehousing Framework around a common set of interfaces and will deliver this value through the enhancement of Microsoft SQL Server and related products within the Microsoft BackOffice family.
