PT Indosat Chooses Windows NT for New Online Service

REDMOND, Wash., July 1, 1997 — PT Indosat, launching the new Indonesia Interactive® (i2® ) online service, today announced a broad technology initiative with Microsoft Corp. for use of the Windows NT® operating system and Microsoft® Commercial Internet System. PT Indosat, one of the first companies in Indonesia to license the Microsoft Commercial Internet System, will use the Microsoft BackOffice® family of products to run a variety of services.

The Microsoft Commercial Internet System is built on the Microsoft Windows NT Server network operating system and Microsoft Internet Information Server. This open platform technology is an advanced set of software tools used for delivering interactive services and creating, managing and distributing content. The Microsoft Commercial Internet System offers the power to support tens of thousands of concurrent users, the scalability to support millions of users per day, and the openness to work with applications and extensions developed by Internet developers.

Indonesia’s PT Indosat is an Internet service provider focused on developing rich local content and serving Web and transaction-based solutions for retail organizations, financial institutions, broadcasters, corporations and government agencies. PT Indosat will use the Microsoft Commercial Internet System to build one of the most complete online services on the Internet to date.

i2, the new interactive service, is free to INDOSATnet® subscribers and available to anyone with access to the Internet. It will feature news, business information, stock quotes, travel information and entertainment news. In addition, i2 will feature chat lines, audio- and videoconferencing, movie previews, and personalization, which will allow customers to choose what they want to see and will create new opportunities for advertisers and content partners to provide compelling personalized content and services.

PT Indosat will begin to deploy Microsoft Commercial Internet System as the foundation for its many new services, including Web hosting and providing Internet connectivity to businesses and consumers. The Microsoft Commercial Internet System, consisting of Internet

Mail Server, Internet News Server, Microsoft Membership System, Microsoft Content Replication System, Microsoft Personalization System, Microsoft Conference Server and Microsoft Commerce Server, will enable PT Indosat to provide complete and innovative solutions to its customers.

PT Indosat was established in 1967 as a strategic foreign investment partnership with the Indonesian government to provide international telecommunications through Intelsat satellite services. After a decade of strong growth and establishment of a sound internal culture, the organization became wholly Indonesian state-owned in 1980 when the government bought all shares in the company from International Telephone and Telegraph Corp.
