Microsoft Announces Third Annual Retail Application Developer Awards

NEW ORLEANS, June 15, 1998 — Microsoft Corp. will announce the winners of this year’s annual Retail Application Developer (RAD) awards tonight, honoring the most innovative Microsoft-based software solutions for the retail, transportation and distribution industries. The Microsoft® RAD awards recognize application developers that demonstrate industry leadership by creating best-of-breed solutions that maximize retail business benefits.

“The increased functionality that developers have added to their applications using Microsoft technology especially stood out this year,”
said Judy Dulcich, retail industry marketing manager at Microsoft.
“The improved quality and number of application entries clearly demonstrate the broad industry acceptance the RAD awards are receiving as a rising standard of achievement for retail developers.”

More than 100 entries were received this year from the industry’s top retail, transportation and distribution solution developers, of which 80 percent are supporters of the Microsoft ActiveStore
™
retail technology architecture initiative. The following are this year’s winners and their respective categories:

The judges awarded honorable mentions to the following companies:

“The quality of this year’s RAD entries was truly outstanding,”
said Dan Roddy, RAD judge and vice president, technology at Tricon Global Restaurants Inc.
“The award winners demonstrated a clear vision for the future of retail technology systems. I was very impressed by the progress that has been made to improve the flexibility and user-friendliness of innovative industry solutions.”

Judging criteria included quantifiable business benefits, best use of the Microsoft Windows® operating system-based technology and the Microsoft BackOffice® family of server applications, ease of use and adoption, and integration and exploitation of Internet and intranet technology. Applicants were judged on several factors aimed at rewarding solution developers that meet business objectives and customer satisfaction needs.

This year’s panel of judges included members from retail, publication and technology organizations: Robert Grimes, chairman and chief executive officer at Cyntergy Corp.; Dennis Hadley, president of the Independent Cash Register Dealers Association; Barry Wise, president of Wise Retail Consultants; Tia Potter, editor and publisher of newsletters for Fairchild Publications; Dan Roddy, vice president, technology, Tricon Global Restaurants Inc.; Lawrence Sachs, vice president for information systems at Red Apple; Don McDowell, IT manager international at Florists’ Transworld Delivery Inc. (FTD).
