REDMOND, Wash. – July 22, 1998 – – Sidewalk
™
.com city guide and the area’s leading companies will work together this week to raise $15,000 of software for Metro Volunteer Centers in proclaiming the nation’s first Online Community Involvement Week. Employees from The Pillsbury Co., General Mills Inc. and St. Paul Companies Inc. as well as Minnesota residents will log on to the Internet and head to the community section of Sidewalk.com beginning at 8 a.m. today to sign an electronic
“proclamation.”

By signing the proclamation, they agree to increase their volunteerism and community involvement in the Twin Cities. In return for each volunteer pledge made to the community, Sidewalk.com will donate $25 of software to Metro Volunteer Centers – The United Way Volunteer Center (Minneapolis), The Volunteer Center (St. Paul) and Community Volunteer Service (Stillwater). The software products will be distributed by the volunteer centers to directly benefit participating agencies.

“Pillsbury is committed to making an impact in the communities where our employees live and work,”
said Barb Alfrey, manager of volunteer programs for Pillsbury.
“Sidewalk.com and its online volunteer database provide the ideal way to bring those opportunities right to our employees’ desktops via the Internet.”

Developed in cooperation with metropolitan area volunteer centers, the Twin Cities Sidewalk Community section hosts a comprehensive, continually updated database of over 5,000

volunteer opportunities at hundreds of agencies throughout the area. Users are able to search for opportunities that match their specific criteria – such as time commitment, cause, location and type of opportunity. Custom-written editorials round out the section, providing users with new ideas about involvement in their neighborhoods and insight into specific agencies.
