Microsoft Corp. Names Electronic Document Management Systems Industry Solution Award Winners

CHICAGO, Oct. 15, 1998 — Microsoft Corp. today presented the 1998 Industry Solution Awards (ISAs) in Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS) to PC DOCS Inc. and Action Technologies Inc. at the 1998 Knowledge Management Expo. The ISAs are designed to recognize developers of document management and structured workflow software applications that best use Microsoft technology.

The awards were presented at a ceremony this morning by Stan Julien, group manager for knowledge management at Microsoft, and Donna Conner, knowledge management marketing manager at Microsoft. Winners were selected by an independent panel of judges based on their use of Microsoft technology, specifically the Microsoft Windows NT Server operating system and the Microsoft BackOffice family of products. Participants were tested on a range of measurable business-benefit scenarios and were asked to demonstrate that their customer application offers the best features and functionality.

“Each of the finalists deserves recognition for strong technology solutions in the document systems industry,” Julien said. “It’s exciting to see the results that are accomplished when Microsoft technology and independent software vendors team together, and we’re proud to see this competitive spirit spawn such innovative and scalable applications.”

Document Management and Structured Workflow ISA Winners by Category

Following are the winners in the two ISA categories specific to Electronic Document Management Systems:

Best Document Management Solution: PC DOCS Inc.

“Customers look to PC DOCS to deliver full-featured, innovative document and knowledge management solutions that embrace and extend the power and scalability of Microsoft environments,” said Craig Wallace, president and COO of PC DOCS/Fulcrum. “We are honored to have been selected by Microsoft for the second year in a row, reaffirming the strength and quality of our document management product line. As we integrate Fulcrum products with our traditional document management offerings, this award also validates our ability to deliver integrated knowledge management solutions to solve real-world problems.”

With its partners, PC DOCS/Fulcrum solves real-world business problems by providing integrated knowledge management software that lets businesses think fast, move fast and make fewer mistakes. PC DOCS’ award-winning document management entry is based on an application developed and installed at Equistar Chemicals LP in Houston. Equistar installed CyberDOCS and PowerDOCS – the browser and Windows-based clients to DOCSFusion – to provide users controlled access to the wealth of its enterprise information, including ISO documents, regulatory compliance documents, policies and procedures. CyberDOCS provides full document management capabilities to Web-based users, combining JavaScript, Java Applets, Microsoft Active Server Pages and the DCOM communication interface to deliver the performance, reliability and security of client/server document management functionality across a Web connection. PowerDOCS provides a Windows-based client to DOCSFusion, combining the ease of use and desktop functionality of a Windows operating system-based application with the power of a server-centric architecture.

Best Structured Workflow Solution: Action Technologies Inc.

In the award-winning industry solution for workflow, ActionWorks, Action Technologies’ workflow software, was used by Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems, which produces the F-16 and portions of the F-22 and F-2 fighters, to streamline its quality assurance reporting process.

ActionWorks was selected in large part because it was able to deliver significant business benefits. Lockheed’s ActionWorks-based system has shown a 50 percent reduction in the problem resolution cycle time and the company is projecting a net cumulative savings of over $1 million by 2001. Scalability was another important factor. ActionWorks demonstrated the ability to scale to support 500 users. The application also showed tight and effective integration of workflow with other systems and technologies, including Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP), as well as flexibility in handling structured, collaborative and ad hoc work within the same process.

“Action Technologies developed ActionWorks, a Web-based workflow software suite, for the Microsoft BackOffice server platform,” said Sumi Shohara, vice president of marketing. We have consistently helped our customers leverage their IT investment to achieve significant business benefits such as increased customer satisfaction, faster time-to-market, and reduced costs, by managing their core business processes across intranets, extranets or corporate LANs. We are honored to accept the Industry Solutions Award for workflow for the second consecutive year.”

ISA Category Descriptions

The Best Document Management Solution award recognizes the best use of technology to support the management of multiformat documents with a rich set of library services, including functions for check-in and check-out, versioning and access control. Document management systems primarily manage documents in their most active stage of processing, when they are first created, reviewed, edited and approved for distribution.

The Best Structured Workflow Solution award represents applications with high throughput, high storage requirements and a high degree of task similarity. They typically require a constant connection between the server and the client as data from various storage systems is simultaneously retrieved to help the worker complete the activity (as opposed to store-and-forward messaging connectivity). Imaging is often a component of these solutions.
