What Does the New Year Hold for Wall Street?

REDMOND, Wash., December 28, 1998 — Everyone loves hearing the annual New Year predictions, and nothing seems to provoke more speculation than the market’s moves for the coming year. As part of its special Year-End Review & Outlook report, MSN MoneyCentral asked visitors to the site what they foresee for the market in 1999. Here, based on more than 2,400 responses, is what they had to say:

Will the Dow hit 10,000 before the Millennium?

Expectations are high for the coming year – only 13 percent see the market going down in 1999. And a whopping 55 percent of respondents predict the Dow Jones Industrial Average will finish above 10,000 in the New Year. There are a few skeptics out there – 16 percent predict the Dow will fall below 9,000.
