Microsoft Windows CE and HP Jornada Explodes Into MGM’s New James Bond Movie, “The World Is Not Enough”

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 27, 1999 — At last, Bond girls have better gadgets! Microsoft Corp. today announced it is teaming up with Hewlett-Packard Co. and MGM to feature the Microsoft® Windows® CE operating system-based HP Jornada Palm-size PC (P/PC) in the upcoming James Bond action film,
“The World Is Not Enough,”
scheduled for release Nov. 19, 1999. In the movie, Dr. Christmas Jones, a nuclear physicist played by Denise Richards, relies on her own Windows CE-based HP Jornada P/PC to handle a potentially explosive situation.

In a race to defuse an international power struggle with the world’s oil supply hanging in the balance, nuclear weapons expert Dr. Jones, along with the world’s most famous international secret agent, James Bond, uses the innovative Jornada P/PC to diagnose a bomb while traveling at 70 mph, demonstrating how the product can do more than just organize her day.

“While we don’t expect that the average user will defuse a nuclear bomb using a Windows CE-based Palm-size PC, we view the newest Bond film as a fun and creative opportunity to showcase the portability, power and coolness of this device,”
said Jonathan Roberts, general manager of the Productivity Appliance Division at Microsoft.
“James Bond movies traditionally highlight cutting-edge technologies, and the latest P/PCs are setting new standards for what our customers expect from these devices, aligning nicely with the technology theme of the movie.”

This Bond campaign is the result of the first collaboration between Microsoft, HP and MGM. The collaboration will include a worldwide marketing campaign and cross-promotional efforts with MGM and HP, including print and broadcast advertising and online marketing. In addition, the Windows and MSN.com TM network of Internet services divisions of Microsoft are also promoting the overall Microsoft and MGM relationship. The campaign is scheduled to start in early October and run through the holiday season.

“We wanted Dr. Christmas Jones to have cool, intelligent technology at her disposal. It’s no longer just 007 who puts the latest technology to work. In the spirit of ‘girl power,’ Bond women need better gadgets too, and the P/PC was a great fit,”
said Keith Snelgrove, senior vice president of Worldwide Promotions at MGM.
“We are really excited to be working with two of the premier technology companies and are delighted that they are joining the Bond family.”

“With the cutting-edge combination of the HP Jornada 400 P/PC series and Windows CE operating system, it made sense to seek cross-promotional opportunities that highlight the advanced functionality of our products,”
said Kheng Joo Khaw, general manager of HP’s Asia Pacific PC Division.
“The technology theme of ‘The World Is Not Enough’ provided an excellent venue to do just that.”

Windows CE-based Palm-size PCs are mobile companions that give users the freedom to work more effectively, wherever their business takes them. Not only do they allow users to manage their day, access their address book, and read and reply to their e-mail, but P/PCs now provide full-color displays and support high-quality audio, allowing customers to view maps and photos and listen to the latest music.
