MSN and eMachines Unveil Low-Cost MSN Companion

REDMOND, Wash., and IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 9, 2000 — MSN and eMachines™ Inc., the third-largest vendor of desktop PCs sold through U.S. retailers, today announced product specifications and retail information on the soon-to-be-available MSN® Companion by eMachines. To provide consumers with simple and affordable devices that facilitate getting online, MSN has joined forces with eMachines to deliver a low-cost MSN-based Internet appliance that enables consumers to connect more easily and communicate more clearly using leading services from the MSN network of Internet services such as the MSN Hotmail® Web-based e-mail service, MSN Search and the MoneyCentral™
online personal finance guide. With the addition of this product, MSN now offers one of the widest range of choices for consumers in the Internet appliance market.

“Today more than 40 percent of U.S. homes don’t own a PC or have an easy way to access the Internet,”
said Yusuf Mehdi, vice president of MSN at Microsoft.
“Now with the MSN Companion by eMachines, consumers have an easy and very affordable way to experience the best of the Internet and MSN for popular activities like e-mailing, instant messaging and online shopping.”

“The eMachines MSN Companion is one of the first in a new generation of Internet appliances to unleash the power of the Internet to consumers in a simple and affordable way,”
said Stephen Dukker, president and CEO of eMachines.
“We’re providing consumers with an easy-to-use device that includes built-in music media players as well as video and animation that offer compatibility with a majority of the rich multimedia sites on the Internet.”

The MSN Companion by eMachines is uniquely designed for use with a standard-size PC monitor and keyboard. eMachines implemented this approach as a benefit to consumers who intend to use the device as their primary means of accessing the Internet and thus require the comfort and readability of an easy-to-view screen. In addition, consumers have the option to continue using their monitor if they decide to purchase a full-size desktop PC. The USB wheel mouse and full-size eBoard™
keyboard included with the MSN Companion by eMachines provide consumers with easy, one-touch access to best-of-breed services from MSN such as MSN Hotmail, MSN Search, MSN MoneyCentral and other Internet sites, while providing users with access to the Web.
