Flight1 Aviation Technologies Licenses Microsoft ESP v1.0 Object Code to Enhance Training Simulations

REDMOND, Wash., and ATLANTA — Dec. 17, 2009 — Microsoft Corp. and Flight1 Aviation Technologies (Flight1 Tech) have entered into an intellectual property (IP) license agreement that gives Flight1 Tech access to Microsoft ESP’s powerful visual simulation technology. Flight1 Tech took a license for the Microsoft® ESP™ v1.0 object code, which enables the company to create detailed, customized flight safety, flight training and strategic solutions for its customers.

Microsoft ESP technology allows users to operate vehicle models that incorporate real-world physics to enhance realism, such as in the interior and instrumentation of a Boeing FA-18 shown here.

“We consider our company to be one of the most experienced third-party solution providers working with Microsoft’s popular series simulation engines, and see the broad versatility of the ESP simulation platform as part of the natural progression of our portfolio of services,” said Jim Rhoads, vice president at Flight1 Aviation Technologies. “This licensing agreement will provide our civil and military customers with a wide array of training and safety simulation technologies, within a flexible and affordable solution that meets their unique requirements.”

Microsoft ESP is a visual simulation software development platform that brings immersive games-based technology to training and decision support for commercial, government and education organizations. Flight1 Tech will use this Microsoft ESP v1.0 license to create immersive visual simulations that prepare aviation trainees and customers with the skills they need to perform at the highest levels of proficiency.

“This agreement with Flight1 Tech is an important example of how Microsoft’s programmatic IP licensing efforts fuel innovation across the industry,” said David Kaefer, general manager of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft. “Whether the field is aviation technology or digital photography, licensing IP is good for business because it helps our partners shorten development cycles in responding to the dynamic needs of their customers.”
