Microsoft Brings Rich, Connected Experiences to Digital Signage Market

REDMOND, Wash. — March 31, 2010 — In the growing market of digital signage, Microsoft Corp. and Intel Corporation took a big step forward at the annual National Retail Federation (NRF) convention in New York where they announced a strategic relationship to deliver a platform specifically for the industry.

Debuted at NRF, Microsoft featured the Intel digital signage proof of concept built on Windows Embedded Standard 7 operating system in its booth. The nearly eight-foot-tall multiuser, multitouch Intel Intelligent Digital Signage Concept emulates a virtual store setting where customers may use the holographic screen to explore merchandise, find out about promotions, submit feedback on products, read customer reviews, view past purchasing histories, and share what they have discovered with their friends via social media and mobile phone integration.

Built-in video analytics technologies recognize customers’ physical attributes such as gender and height, and then generate tailored ad displays that enable advertisers to measure the effectiveness of their campaigns. The system can also identify two customers at once, customizing ads for both on a transparent hologram screen, allowing them to browse from a single location.

Some of the highlights of the optimized platform include these:

  • Rich immersive user experiences that include panning and zoom, touch, and gesture input to dramatically improve Web browsing and the overall user experience OEMs can deliver out of the box

  • Remote deployment and management capabilities that minimize on-site maintenance, updates and repairs, driving clear added value through lower total cost of ownership

  • Power management through conditional user interfaces that react to the environment around them, enabling OEMs to create more green devices that save on energy costs
