In its effort to empower personnel to work more efficiently and collaboratively, the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has chosen to deploy a CSC cloud productivity solution based on Microsoft Office 365, encompassing email messaging, calendaring, instant messaging and webconferencing. As the contract prime, Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC) will lead the cloud implementation, which will provide 60,000 FAA employees and 20,000 DOT employees with access to email, instant messaging, calendaring and webconferencing tools with robust security from virtually any device.

The FAA’s decision to empower greater employee productivity through cloud computing supports the agency’s broader NextGen initiative, designed to make air travel more convenient and dependable for citizens. The FAA joins a host of prominent government agencies that have made the decision to move to the cloud, including federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Broadcasting Board of Governors; the states of California, Nebraska and Minnesota; and the cities of New York and San Francisco.

“The FAA’s mission is essential to how our nation functions, and the agency’s decision to implement Office 365 validates our approach to enterprise security, privacy and compliance in the cloud,” said Curt Kolcun, vice president of U.S. Public Sector at Microsoft Corp. “Microsoft has supported government agencies such as the FAA for nearly 30 years, and as a committed partner we’ll continue to innovate in ways that help our public-sector customers improve efficiency and reduce operating costs while delivering better citizen services.”

“By utilizing Microsoft Office 365, CSC’s ‘as a service’ expertise will help lead the FAA’s efforts to address the ‘cloud-first’ policy put forth by the Office of Management and Budget,” said Leif Ulstup, president of CSC’s North American Public Sector Federal Consulting Practice. “We have worked closely with the FAA for four decades and are committed to delivering a secure, cost-effective and flexible enterprisewide cloud solution in support of the agency’s mission to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world.”
