Farewell Cilla
Proving her status as a true British icon, the sad loss of Cilla Black meant that even reality star Kim Kardashian had to take a backseat, as the nation sought out Cilla memories online. However it’s the modern-day queen of pop, American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift that’s our most searched-for celebrity this year, followed by Cilla and Kim, whilst Caitlin Jenner’s debut saw her take the fourth spot – clean sweep for the girls topping our celebrity list this year.

In a year that saw pollsters stumped by voters throughout the UK, it was politics that ruled our searches – with the general election and tightly-fought Labour leadership contest taking the first and second spots on the list of the most-searched news stories. The recent attacks in Paris came third, while curiosity surrounding ISIS saw the group placed in fourth – with the birth of Princess Charlotte, a moment that galvanized the nation, appearing in fifth.
Sport in the spotlight
Despite England’s early exit, the Rugby World Cup came scrumming in as the UK’s most searched-for sporting event. The quintessentially British Wimbledon Finals also captured the nation’s attention, with the tennis championship taking second spot. Continuing our look at the best of British prowess, Lewis Hamilton took pole position in the most searched-for sports personalities as he became the first British driver in history to win consecutive Formula 1 titles. Meanwhile Andy Murray followed in second place, with Rory McIlroy taking the third spot.
Setting the film, music, and celebrity worlds alight
And it’s another chart-topper for Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, as Uptown Funk leads the pack of most searched-for songs of the year, despite originally being released in 2014. Runaway success Hosier’s Take Me To Church is second, and Taylor Swift’s international number one Bad Blood is third.
Reigning supreme for the silver screen, the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Episode VII is the most searched for film of the year despite not even being released – however a shock result sees James Bond’s Spectre takes the fourth spot, being pipped to the post by Jurassic World and the much-hyped Fifty Shades of Grey.
