Microsoft broadens partner ecosystem in bringing more than 20 affordable yet powerful and highly mobile Windows tablets to the market

Donating 300 tablets to local schools and NGOs to champion the new ‘My Learning Companion’ initiative

HONG KONG, November 10, 2014 – Following the announcement in April this year of the $0 royalty licensing program for devices with screens under 9 inches, Microsoft Hong Kong today showcased more than 20 brand new and value-driven Windows devices with some models striking below the HKD1000 price point. The burgeoning wave of partner-manufactured devices is the result of the broadening ecosystem and collaboration with more ODMs and OEMs in the region. It also demonstrates how Microsoft is transforming to accelerate innovation in the ‘mobile-first, cloud-first’ world, making Windows devices more accessible to users by serving their different needs.

Microsoft has a unique capability for delivering productive experiences, and these Windows devices will help people to get more done. The latest tablet devices come out-of-the-box with full-featured Windows and Office 365 Personal (free 1-year subscription) with unlimited OneDrive cloud storage, as well as 60 free Skype world calling minutes per month to call mobile phones, landlines or PCs in more than 60 countries around the world. With the Office 365 subscription, users can also install the latest full desktop version of Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook, on one additional PC or Mac. Office 365 can assure customers of uncompromised productivity with genuine and always up-to-date Office across devices.

Donating 300 Windows Devices to Support the Launch of My Learning Companion Program

Microsoft is committed to harnessing the power of IT to transform eLearning. As part of the continuous effort in driving new approaches to learning and teaching in this mobile-first, cloud-first world, Microsoft will be launching a new initiative called ‘My Learning Companion’ (MLC). Microsoft’s MLC is an integrated eLearning solution which offers the combined strengths of mobile device, productivity tool (Office 365), and eLearning applications as well as content. One major advantage of MLC includes modern computing usage while transitioning from traditional desktop to modern tablet which supports traditional eLearning resources including Flash. Another is enjoying free usage of Office 365 under the Partners in Learning program and associated unlimited cloud storage. Finally, the solution offers free downloads of more than 20,000 eLearning apps, including local apps such as Modern Education and Starwish Little Prince. This supports skills development needed in the 21st century by enabling students to learn, create, share, discuss and store their knowledge.

To support the launch of MLC, Microsoft has joined forces with Digital 2, a locally based partner with international business presence, to donate 300 Windows devices to local education and non-profit sectors. Two NGO beneficiary organizations are Hong Kong Student Aid Society and Spastics Association of Hong Kong. For the education sector, these donated Windows tablets will contribute to a device pool which will be on loan to local schools to pilot the My Learning Companion. Salesian School and Shun Tak Fraternal Association Yung Yau College are the first two schools to support the pilot program.

Holiday Offers on Windows Devices

Microsoft is launching a series of special offers for customers purchasing designated brands and models of these newly launched Windows tablets. Any purchase will get an additional 365 minutes of international calls on Skype for free on top of its one-year free Office 365 subscription, enabling them to enjoy a total of 1,085 minutes of Skype call minutes for free, helping them stay connected with friends and family in more than 60 countries. Customers can also get HKD100 discount with any purchase of HKD1,000 or above on Microsoft HK Store, as well as free $30 credits on clickplay to enjoy the latest HD Hollywood blockbusters on mobile devices. Promotion period runs from now until December 31, 2014. Deadline for offer registration and redemption is January 15, 2015.
