Microsoft Announces ActiveX Development Kit For Webmasters and Developers

REDMOND, Wash., March 12, 1996 — Microsoft Corp. today announced a comprehensive development kit designed to provide answers and information to assist developers in jump-starting development for the World Wide Web. In addition to providing the Microsoft®
Internet Information Server (IIS) and other technologies, the Microsoft ActiveX
™
Development Kit providesextensive information on ways to use Microsoft tools in Internet and intranet solutions.


The ActiveX Development Kit is the fastest and easiest way to kick off development of Internet solutions,”
said Bob Muglia, vice president of developer tools in the Internet platforms and tools division at Microsoft.
“Most important, it provides real-life solutions showing ways developers can add value to the Web with Microsoft ActiveX Technologies.”

The ActiveX Development Kit contains more than 600 MB of Internet information and products, including the Microsoft Internet Information Server, a comprehensive sample application, help files, Windows NT
™
3.51 operating system-based updates to support IIS, and the Software Development Kit (SDK) for Microsoft ActiveX Technologies.

The product’s documentation is organized to help make it easy for Webmasters and developers to take advantage of the Internet immediately and to access updated information and samples on Microsoft’s Web site.

In addition to offering the CD-ROM-based Microsoft ActiveX Development Kit, Microsoft will also be posting the latest Internet development information on its Internet Developer Toolbox Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/intdev).

The CD-ROM version of the ActiveX Development Kit is scheduled to be available directly from Microsoft in the second quarter of 1996 for $99. Current Microsoft Developer Network Level 2 and Level 3 members worldwide will receive the Microsoft ActiveX Development Kit as part of their membership. The product is also planned to be given to attendees at various educational events produced by Microsoft in coming months, including the Internet Professional Developers Conference, Microsoft at the Movies and TechEd.

The Microsoft ActiveX Development Kit includes Microsoft Internet Information Server as well as the ActiveX SDK, which provides ultimate flexibility in extending IIS. The kit also contains a fully functional order-entry application using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 2.0, the Internet Database Connector, Microsoft SQL Server
™, and Microsoft Access for the Windows® 95 operating system. The order-entry application illustrates ways to activate the Internet with Microsoft technology today. The ActiveX Development Kit also provides information about Microsoft Internet technology tomorrow, such as Visual Basic®
, Scripting Edition and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0.
