ONYX First Vendor to License Run-Time Version of Microsoft SQL Server For Customer Management Application

REDMOND, Wash., April 22, 1997 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that ONYX Software Corp. is the first Microsoft® Solution Developer in the customer management market to license the run-time version of Microsoft SQL Server
™
. ONYX will embed this version of Microsoft SQL Server within its Customer Center application, providing users with a single tool to access all customer information via the desktop, a remote computer or the Internet.

Microsoft’s run-time licensing program is designed to make it easier for organizations to install and deploy complete Microsoft SQL Server-based applications, ultimately reducing the cost of ownership of these programs. Microsoft expects that many Solution Developers will eventually incorporate the run-time licensing option into their products to provide customers with these benefits.

Within the customer management market – which encompasses sales force automation, customer service and customer support applications – vendors are developing and optimizing their applications for Microsoft SQL Server. Today, 13 of the top 15 providers of customer management applications support Microsoft SQL Server.

“ONYX’s customers will reap the benefits of enhanced integration and a single, simple installation procedure because of this licensing option with the run-time version of Microsoft
SQL Server,” said Matthew B. Ragen, worldwide marketing manager for customer management at Microsoft. “This is an important consideration for organizations that are looking to reduce the costs of

installation and deployment. We expect that the ONYX Customer Center application with the run-time version of Microsoft SQL Server will be very popular.”

Microsoft SQL Server has become the database of choice for many Microsoft Solution Developers and their enterprise customers seeking robust functionality, scalability and lower cost of ownership. Similarly, ONYX’s Customer Center application is highly regarded in the industry for its tight functional integration, intuitive user interface and broad flexibility.

“Having the ability to include this run-time license within the Customer Center architecture is an important part of our strategy to deliver the best total customer management solutions in the market at a reasonable cost,” said Brian Janssen, ONYX’s co-founder and executive vice president of marketing. “With the embedded license, our customers will find it easier to deploy the client/server infrastructure that we require. Additionally, this is further indication of our commitment to providing complete support of the Microsoft BackOffice
™
family.”
