Microsoft and Wall Data Announce SNA Intranet Starter Kit

REDMOND, Wash., May 12, 1997 — Microsoft Corp. and Wall Data Inc. today announced the SNA Intranet Starter Kit featuring Microsoft® SNA Server and the Wall Data® ARPEGGIO
™
Live!. The package provides a comprehensive and easy-to-use solution allowing corporations to publish live host information instantly to intranet users.

Businesses need faster and better access to legacy data without increasing the desktop footprint or overall cost of administration. The SNA Intranet Starter Kit provides a fully integrated solution that automatically publishes host applications and data sources. Organizations can now provide users with a familiar Web browser graphical interface to host data, without the added cost of programming or retraining. Both Microsoft SNA Server and ARPEGGIO Live! run on the server to reduce overhead and expense at the desktop.

“Our customers have told us they want a cost-effective way to combine intuitive Web-based publishing with their SNA investment,” said Mike Nash, director of marketing, personal and business systems group at Microsoft. “With the SNA Intranet Starter Kit, Microsoft and Wall Data deliver a complete information publishing solution for businesses that need to drive all types of enterprise data to users through an intranet.”

The SNA Intranet Starter Kit allows businesses to create sophisticated Web-based applications that combine dynamically published information from numerous enterprise systems and platforms with a Web environment. Legacy applications and databases, including DB2, client/server applications, and Microsoft Office files and applications such as Word or Microsoft Excel, can be combined into a single point of information. ARPEGGIO Live! leverages development tools by supporting applications written in the Visual Basic® programming system, Visual Basic, Scripting Edition, and the Visual C++® development system. Businesses can use HTML page templates that ship with ARPEGGIO Live! or add custom controls and extensions.

“Microsoft and Wall Data are building on their combined industry-leading expertise in server software, SNA, legacy applications, and database reporting and publishing to create a mission-critical, intranet-ready solution,” said John Wall, president of Wall Data. “By extending our powerful and proven solutions to the Web, we are fulfilling ARPEGGIO’s mission to publish the business information assets of organizations to the broadest base of users possible.”

The SNA Intranet Starter Kit is planned to be available through resellers before the end of May for an estimated list price of $3,995.
