Microsoft Introduces Works 4.5

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 20, 1997 — Microsoft Corp. today announced the release of Microsoft® Works 4.5, an update to the most popular integrated software program in the world for the Windows® operating system. Works provides people with the right set of easy-to-use basic tools for their home PCs, including an integrated word processor, database and spreadsheet. Works 4.5 has added Internet browsing capability, thousands of clip-art images, and 100 new templates. This product update enables existing and new Works users to spice up their documents with new clip art images, have a wider selection of premade documents at their fingertips, and surf the Internet easily.

Specifically, Works 4.5 incorporates the following:

  • One hundred new templates for home, volunteer and civic activities, and education

  • Clip Art Gallery 3.23 with 7,000 pieces of clip art (up from 107)

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer

More than 1 million people have obtained Works since it was released in August 1995. It has consistently been at the top of the home productivity charts since its release, a fact that attests to the popularity and satisfaction of the product.

Microsoft Works 4.5 is available now from resellers nationwide for an estimated retail price of $54.95 ($10 US/$15 CDN rebate available to already licensed users of Microsoft Works 4.0 or earlier, AppleWorks, Greatworks, ClarisWorks, or WordPerfect Works). Microsoft Works 4.5 is also available in Microsoft Home Essentials

System Requirements

  • Personal computer with 386DX or higher processor (486 recommended)

  • Microsoft Windows 95 operating system or later or Microsoft Windows NT® Workstation operating system version 4.0 or later (will not run on earlier versions)

  • 8 MB of memory (RAM) for Windows 95; 12 MB for Windows NT Workstation

  • 5-25 MB of available hard disk space, depending on which optional components are installed

  • Double-speed or faster CD-ROM drive

  • VGA or higher-resolution monitor (Super VGA, 256-color monitor recommended)

  • Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device and 9600 bps or faster modem for communication features

To use Microsoft Internet Explorer, users need these additional items:

  • 486 or Pentium processor recommended; multimedia computer required to access sound and other multimedia effects

  • 3-18 MB of additional available hard disk space

  • 14,400 bps or faster modem and Internet access
