Microsoft Office 97 Deployed on Over 6,000 Desktops At Leading Technology Research Firm

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 30, 1997 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that Battelle has deployed 6,000 copies of Microsoft® Office 97 companywide. Battelle recognized that by adopting Office 97 as its company standard it would reduce its total cost of owning and administering productivity software. In addition, by implementing a custom toolkit built with Word 97 to speed completion of standard documents, Battelle has saved 1,000 staff-hours per day that were previously spent managing communications.

“To accomplish breakthrough technology in a variety of industries, our employees need leading-edge technology tools, such as Office 97, to share a greater amount of information in a timely manner,”
said Marilyn B. Davison, director of information management at Battelle.
“Office 97 helps us communicate better on projects ranging from compact disk technology to developing a protective coating for golf balls that eliminates cracking when hit with the edge of an iron.”

Battelle, based in Columbus, Ohio, previously had a mixed desktop environment using both Lotus 123 and WordPerfect. The company chose to standardize on Office 97 to solidify communication and collaboration among employees and departments.

Custom Solutions Help Save Time and Money

Battelle has saved time and money with the implementation of a customized toolkit developed in-house for Word 97 and the PowerPoint® 97 presentation graphics program that automatically populates standard forms with personal contact information using Visual Basic® for Applications. Upon initial installation, users are asked a series of questions, including name, e-mail, address and phone number. This information is stored and later used to help complete standard company documents such as memos, purchase orders and travel expense forms, saving employees from having to retype the information.

“Imagine the amount of time per day that we previously spent filling out the same information on common forms,”
Davison said.
“This solution not only saves about 1,000 employee hours per day across the organization, it also ensures consistent and standard communication.”

Battelle joins the growing number of leading companies that have selected Microsoft Office 97 as their corporate standard.
