Microsoft Site Server 3.0 and Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition Now in Beta

REDMOND, Wash., Jan. 26, 1998 — Microsoft Corp. today announced the immediate availability of beta versions of Microsoft® Site Server 3.0 and Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition. These new versions of Site Server enable businesses to build powerful Web solutions for the Microsoft Windows NT® network operating system with Internet Information Server (IIS).

Site Server 3.0 is the powerful intranet server for publishing and finding information more easily and quickly. Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition, a superset of Site Server 3.0 is the comprehensive Internet server for conducting business online. Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition is the successor to Site Server Enterprise Edition.

The beta releases of Site Server 3.0 and Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition are available for download and evaluation from the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/siteserver/ .

Site Server 3.0 enables users and administrators to publish information easily by providing authors with a structured content submission, posting and approval process. Users can easily find information stored in a variety of sources including Web sites, file servers, Microsoft SQL Server

and ODBC databases, and Microsoft Exchange folders throughout their organization. Site Server 3.0 can deliver information that is relevant to users through personalized Web pages, Active Channel

content and e-mail, and enable administrators to analyze usage of the site to maximize its effectiveness on the intranet.

Site Server 3.0 delivers these capabilities through the following features:

  • Content management. Publish content more quickly and easily by enabling multiple authors to submit content via a drag-and-drop Web interface or with tools such as the Microsoft FrontPage® 98 Web site creation and management tool. Site editors can approve, edit and enforce uniform guidelines for content before deployment.

  • Content deployment. Replicate site content from a staging server to one or multiple production servers within the organization or around the world in a flexible and high-performance manner.

  • Search. Powerful enterprise search capabilities enable users to find information stored on intranet and Internet Web sites, file servers, Microsoft SQL Server and other ODBC databases, and Microsoft Exchange folders.

  • Personalization. Deliver personalized content easily via personalized Web pages with the new rule builder tools and via personalized mailings with the direct mailer tool.

  • Push. Deliver dynamic information directly to users’ desktops in a bandwidth-efficient manner via Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0’s Active Channel technology.

  • Knowledge Manager. Enable users to easily browse, search, share, and subscribe to relevant information collected throughout the organization via this Web-based application that integrates the Site Server search and delivery features.

  • Analysis. Improve the employee experience on an intranet by analyzing usage patterns and site structure. Build more valuable sites by determining what content is viewed, how users navigate through the site, who visits the site, and how frequently users return. Analyze Search results including keywords, query type, and number of returned items to improve the effectiveness of a Search service.


Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition: The Comprehensive Internet Server for Conducting Business Online

Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition allows users to engage customers and partners by creating cost-effective Internet and commerce sites and applications. It also allows users to transact online with secure and scalable order capture, management and routing. Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition enables administrators to analyze customer and partner purchases and usage.

Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition offers powerful features for business-to-business as well as business-to-consumer applications, including the following:

  • Commerce Interchange Pipeline (CIP). Develop application-to-application interchange of structured business data over the Internet or existing EDI systems using this system.

  • Corporate purchasing support. Easily develop intranet-based corporate purchasing applications using the Microsoft Market rich sample site.

  • Order Processing Pipeline (OPP). Manage orders according to specific business rules using this pipeline of distinct stages that includes functions such as product tax, shipping and handling charges, payment authorizations, and inventory checks.

  • Ad Server. Host online advertisements – including targeted delivery, ad schedule management and exposure limits – with this comprehensive server, which enables businesses to generate revenue and leads from ad campaigns.
