CompUSA Chooses SAP and Microsoft Enterprise Software

SEATTLE, July 1, 1999 — CompUSA Inc. today announced its choice of the SAP TM Retail TM solutions on the Microsoft® Windows NT® operating system and Microsoft SQL Server TM platform at the SAP-Microsoft Forum, an event focused on integrated SAP AG and Microsoft Corp. solutions for inter-enterprise computing and e-commerce. CompUSA has chosen SAP Retail on the Microsoft platform to streamline its financial, retail and materials management systems. When completed, the SAP Retail solution will be the largest SAP implementation running on Windows NT and SQL Server, with 17,000 named users, 4,700 active users and 2,800 concurrent users.

“CompUSA’s legacy systems were challenging on multiple fronts, and a combination of SAP and Microsoft software is providing the foundation for a digital nervous system that will enable CompUSA to address its business needs in a more efficient manner,” said Honorio Padron, senior vice president of Engineering Processes and CIO, CompUSA. “We have long supported the Microsoft platform and are delighted with the commitment of SAP and Microsoft to deliver first-class, scalable, enterprise business software.”

The SAP Retail solution implementation will take place in three phases; the first phase of the project ended last week, and as a result CompUSA’s SAP R/3® financials are now in production on the Microsoft platform. When the project is complete, the SAP Retail solution will serve more than 200 CompUSA Superstores TM across North America and will process 1 million point-of-sale line items per day. The estimated size of the SQL Server 7.0 database is just under a terabyte, based on a detailed sizing activity conducted by multiple vendors.

“Microsoft is committed to delivering an enterprise-ready platform suitable for demanding commercial applications, and as the largest customer using the Microsoft platform with SAP inter-enterprise business software, CompUSA will showcase the scalability, reliability and functionality of Windows NT and SQL Server,” said Steve Ballmer, president of Microsoft. “We are delighted that CompUSA has chosen to deploy its SAP software on the Microsoft platform.”

“To stay competitive in the Internet economy, companies are looking for new ways to streamline processes and improve customer responsiveness,” said Andy Zoldan, vice president of New Dimensions at SAP America, Inc. “We’re pleased that CompUSA selected the SAP Retail solution for improving the company’s efficiency and lowering TCO.”
