REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 1, 1999 — Microsoft Corp. today announced it is working with leading anti-virus firms Central Command Inc., Computer Associates International Inc., Data Fellows Corp., Network Associates Inc., Norman ASA, Panda Software, Sophos Inc., Symantec Corp. and Trend Micro Inc. to provide free, fully functional anti-virus software to companies, small businesses and consumers preparing for the year 2000 (Y2K). The anti-virus software can be found on Microsoft’s Year 2000 Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/y2k/ or downloaded from the respective anti-virus firms’ sites from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, 1999 (connect-time charges may apply). Once downloaded, the anti-virus software is available for 90 days.
Widespread use of anti-virus software provides increased protection against Y2K-related viruses, hoaxes and other malicious files. Microsoft and its industry partners are committed to helping customers prepare their PC environments for the year 2000 by providing free information, resources and tools. This anti-virus program is another resource in Microsoft’s overall Y2K efforts and represents industry cooperation and support of customers as they prepare for the new millennium.

Microsoft recommends that customers install the anti-virus software of their choice and check the manufacturer’s Web site periodically for updated virus signature files. These files, which are offered for free, can change daily in response to new viruses. According to Deborah Willingham, vice president of the Business and Enterprise Division at Microsoft,
“There are certainly malicious hackers who intend to use Y2K as a reason to wreak havoc for vulnerable businesses and consumers. Such viruses, worms and hoaxes can potentially have the most harmful effect on customers as they prepare for Y2K. Microsoft takes security and Y2K very seriously and is committed to providing the best computing experience for its customers. Working with these industry leaders to provide free anti-virus software will provide our customers with an added level of assurance as the year 2000 approaches.”
