Windows Powered NAS Unit Share Continues to Increase

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 28, 2002 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that analyst firm International Data Corp. (IDC) released information for the second quarter of 2002 that shows the unit share for Microsoft® Windows®
Powered Network Attached Storage (NAS) appliance servers has increased to nearly 32 percent in just over a year and a half since launch.*

Because customers are challenged to manage increasing amounts of data and because IT spending is in a down cycle, it is increasingly important that innovative, comprehensive and cost-effective solutions are available to IT administrators and their businesses. This is where Microsoft continues to display its commitment to the industry by devoting resources to NAS and growing the unit share. Microsoft continues to work with leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Dell Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM Corp., Iomega Corp. and NEC Corp. to provide the best tools, services and support for storage solutions to fit a variety of needs, from small organizations to enterprise environments.

Windows Powered NAS is an optimized file server based on multipurpose Microsoft Windows technology designed for high reliability, availability and ease of management. Because of its specialized nature and advanced features, Windows Powered NAS lowers total cost of ownership for customers.

Server consolidation is one of the key areas where customers are using Windows Powered NAS to reduce their total cost of ownership. By consolidating servers on Windows Powered NAS, customers are experiencing lower cost of ownership with higher availability and scalability while enjoying the benefits of advanced features such as Persistent Storage Manager, Storage Manager, full integration with the Active Directory®
