Microsoft Enters Into Patent Cross-Licensing Agreement With DENSO Corp.

REDMOND, Wash., July 7, 2010 — Microsoft Corp. has signed a patent cross-licensing agreement with DENSO Corp., a leading supplier of advanced automotive technology, to further the development of each company’s current and future products. The agreement with DENSO builds on prior patent agreements Microsoft announced with leading makers of personal navigation devices, such as Alpine Electronics Inc., Pioneer Corp. and TomTom NV. Through this agreement, DENSO will gain access to Microsoft’s patents for its current and future product lines, including auto-drive and navigation technologies. Microsoft also will gain access to DENSO patents. Although the details of the agreement have not been disclosed, the parties indicated that Microsoft is being compensated by DENSO. No technology is being licensed or exchanged as part of the agreement.

“Microsoft is investing in automotive infotainment software, something you can see from products like Ford SYNC, Kia UVO and Blue&Me, and we’ve developed a compelling patent portfolio in this space,” said David Kaefer, general manager of Intellectual Property (IP) Licensing at Microsoft. “A patent license like this will allow both DENSO and Microsoft to deliver the type of cutting-edge innovations that our respective customers demand.”

DENSO is a leading supplier of advanced automotive technology, systems and components for major global automakers, including brands such as Toyota Motor Co. and Lexus.

For more than 13 years, Microsoft has been working with the automotive industry enabling automakers to deliver engaging in-vehicle experiences with the industry-leading Windows Embedded Automotive platform enabling rich connected in-vehicle experiences.

Microsoft’s Commitment to Licensing Technology

The licensing agreement is another example of the important role patents play in ensuring a healthy and vibrant IT ecosystem. Since Microsoft launched its IP licensing program in December 2003, the company has entered into more than 600 licensing agreements and continues to develop programs that make it possible for customers, partners and competitors to access its IP portfolio. The program was developed to open access to Microsoft’s significant research and development investments and its growing, broad patent and IP portfolio.
