Microsoft and Temenos Prove Scale of Support for the Largest Retail Banking Operations

REDMOND, Wash., and GENEVA — Sept. 1, 2010 — Microsoft Corp. and Temenos Group AG, the global provider of banking software, today announced the successful completion of a high-performance benchmark that measured the high-end scalability of TEMENOS T24 (T24) on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter.

The testing environment, created to reflect real-world retail banking activity volumes, was made up of 25 million accounts and 15 million customers across 2,000 branches. At peak performance the system processed more than 3,400 transactions per second in online testing and averaged over 5,200 interest accrual and capitalisations per second during close of business processing. The testing demonstrated near linear scalability (95 percent) in building up toward the final the hardware configuration.

This benchmark was performed as part of the strategic alliance between Temenos and Microsoft announced last year, the aim of which is to deliver an optimized T24 core banking solution on Microsoft technology, and thus greatly increase operational efficiency at large-scale banks. The performance figures shown here together with the massive scalability of SQL Server 2008 R2 make the combination of T24 and Microsoft technologies an increasingly compelling proposition for even the largest banks across the globe.

Karen Cone, general manager of Worldwide Financial Services at Microsoft, adds, “Our partnership with Temenos is proving very successful on several fronts. This confirmation of T24’s performance capability on the Microsoft platform to address the requirements of the world’s largest banks is clearly a very exciting result, which will undoubtedly be of interest to many of our existing financial services customers. Many of these banks already benefit from Microsoft technologies for their mission-critical distribution channels and in support of customer-facing staff. With T24 performing at this level, we are able to deliver those same total cost-of-ownership benefits, flexibility and agility to an area that has historically been hampered by legacy systems, where replacement has been perceived as challenging. We are encouraged to see that a number of banks have already signed up for this winning combination.”

Temenos CEO Andreas Andreades concludes, “We have always been committed to providing our customers with the widest possible choice of hardware and software platforms on which they can run T24. With this benchmark we bring to market a revolutionary solution which we are confident can serve the needs of large banks while delivering a superior cost strategy. This close collaboration with Microsoft, focused on optimizing T24 for the Windows and SQLServer platform, confirms our ongoing effort toward helping our customers to remain the most profitable in the industry.”

The project was undertaken by a joint Temenos and Microsoft team, in the Microsoft performance testing facilities in Redmond, Wash., during July 2010. This is part of an ongoing program of T24 performance testing based on real-case situations across a variety of hardware and software platforms. Intel’s Xeon 7500 Processor Series was used to support the benchmark by providing even more capable platform features, allowing scalable performance, advanced reliability and server consolidation.

Pauline Nist, general manager, Mission Critical Segment Organization, Intel Data Center Group comments: “The team worked together on this performance benchmark where our excellent scalability and results highlight how Microsoft SQL Server and T24 with Intel Xeon processor 7500 series are revolutionizing the performance of mission critical applications.”
