First version of Windows announced

Bill Gates announced Microsoft Windows, a graphical user interface for its MS-DOS operating system that he described as “unique software designed for the serious PC user.”

Offering device-independent graphics and multitasking support, Windows allowed users to run unrelated programs simultaneously and transfer data between programs.

A milestone in the evolution of modern operating systems, Windows provided an affordable desktop computing system that helped usher in the era of PC use in homes.
