Microsoft expands AI investment

Microsoft Research AI was formed, bringing together researchers and more than 5,000 computer scientists and engineers to expand the company’s artificial intelligence efforts.

Led by computer vision expert Harry Shum, the group will accelerate the delivery of AI across agents, apps, services and infrastructure. Microsoft has been a leader in addressing ethical issues around AI, such as lobbying for regulations on how facial-recognition technology is used.

The company, said CEO Satya Nadella, is focused on empowering people and organizations by “democratizing access to intelligence to help solve our most pressing challenges.”
