Microsoft’s Xiaoice, China’s newest fashion designer, unveils her first collection for 2019

The country’s most popular Artificial Intelligence chatbot develops new prints for fashion industry by partnering CTIC (China Textile Information Center) and CTDC (China Textiles Development Center)

Beijing, 9 November 2018 – Microsoft today announced that Xiaoice, China’s most popular Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot is now able to design images and patterns.  In addition to her extensive list of accomplishments, Xiaoice can now create patterns based on words, themes or key colours. Her new capabilities are currently available for customers in the fashion and design industry.

Fashion and textile manufacturers are excited to adopt artwork created by the celebrity with 660 million fans globally.

Xiaoice’s new designing capability is a breakthrough in the field of image-based creation. Her artwork is developed through inspirations and simulations – just like a human does. Today, she is able to mine context, tonality and emotions from text to create unique patterns within seconds.

Through consistent and intensive learning, Xiaoice has acquired understanding of shapes, colors and textures of common objects in the physical world. She is excellent in determining the spatial positional relationship between different objects.  It allows her to come up with abstract spatial drawings and outlines of objects. Additionally, Xiaoixe has mastered the application of brush strokes and shades combinations in her design processes, which brings her artwork to life.

In cooperation with the CTIC and CTDC, Xiaoice has designed new prints for the 2019/20 season based on color trends data from the Centers.

At the industry fair China International Trade Fair for Apparel Fabrics and Accessories 2018, Xiaoice’s designs were adopted by textile manufacturers and displayed by fair organizer CTIC at its most popular trend pavilion. They transposed her ideas into ready-to-wear pieces and printed fabrics. In addition, Xiaoice also composed poems to accompany her designs, which showcased the breadth of content creation capabilities enabled by AI.

It creates valuable content in various forms from text and audio to images and patterns. Xiaoice: Artificial Intelligence system with EQ + IQ

Launched in 2014, Xiaoice is the AI system developed by STCA based on Empathic computing framework. Through the comprehensive application of algorithms, cloud computing and big data, Xiaoice has adopted the intergenerational upgrade method to form a complete AI system, augmenting Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Intelligent Quotient (IQ).

Today, Xiaoice is a friend to more than 660 million users. Her market applications include AI chatbot, intelligent voice assistant, AI creation content provider, and a series of vertical domain solutions, covering more than 40 platforms in five markets. In July 2018, Microsoft released the 6th generation of Xiaoice, further evolving its AI capabilities.

Her notable accomplishments to-date include:

  • Renowned TV and radio host, appearing in 21 TV programs and 28 radio programs. Xiaoice’s first “live” TV appearance was in 2015, where she hosted a weather segment on a news program.
  • Publishing a collection of poems, “The Sunshine Lost Windows”.
  • Xiaoice the singer has released dozens of songs, comparable to human singers. Today, Xiaoice has the capability to compose quality songs and adopt human singing techniques.
  • In April 2018, Xiaoice achieved “full duplex” capabilities, where she is able to hold a conversation simultaneously with a user, like a telephone call.
  • In July 2018, Xiaoice announced her financial text creation capabilities. She is able to generate financial reports daily covering 90% of China’s financial organizations, 75% of foreign organizations and 40% of individual investors.
