At an event «Designing the Digital Future – Artificial Intelligence as an Opportunity for Graubünden» hosted by Junge Mitte Graubünden, Microsoft Switzerland representatives joined a conversation on how AI can benefit local communities, including those in peripheral regions, as reported by Radiotelevisiun Svizra Rumantscha and La Quotidiana.
«In mountain regions such as the Surselva, artificial intelligence opens doors to unprecedented opportunities,» explained Marc Holitscher, National Technology Officer at Microsoft Switzerland, addressing attendees at the Riders Club in Laax. «AI interfaces based on natural language break down barriers for people who haven’t previously engaged with advanced technologies.»
«Digital connectivity is a catalyst for regional development,» noted Ladina Caduff, Director Government Affairs at Microsoft Switzerland. «The Surselva region, with its rich tradition of local craftsmanship, is well-positioned to benefit from AI. With the right infrastructure, technology skills, and openness to change, mountain communities can drive their own digital transformation while preserving their unique heritage.»
The discussion, which also included Bernard Maissen (Director Federal Office of Communications), Reto Gurtner (Executive Chairman Weisse Arena Gruppe), and Rudolf Minsch (Chief Economist economiesuisse), highlighted how small and medium-size businesses outside urban centers possess invaluable knowledge, often passed down through generations in family businesses, that can be scaled through AI solutions. If we succeed in better utilizing this existing knowledge, making it accessible, and scaling it through technical solutions, a significant step will be made. Knowledge is language, and at this interface, generative artificial intelligence can make an important difference. This requires dialogue and the willingness to engage with these topics. A promising start has been made in Laax.
For Microsoft, which has been a responsible partner in Switzerland’s technological journey for over 30 years, including a deep commitment to protecting our customers› data and ensuring their privacy, this vision of inclusive innovation aligns with the country’s tradition of building progress from the ground up, mirroring how AI is being adopted across the country today – not just in major corporations but by members of communities of all sizes.
As reported by RTR, the event also touched on Switzerland’s approach to AI regulation. Microsoft’s approach to AI is built on the principles of responsibility, trust, and inclusivity—ensuring that AI is developed safely and that society can benefit from technological advancement.
