What specific steps is Microsoft taking to promote sustainable AI development in Bulgaria?

The impact of weather and climate-related extremes in Europe has been devastating, with economic losses estimated at EUR 738 billion in last 50 years in the EU. Last year, we surpassed the 1.5-degree Celsius increase, and if warming continues to 3 degrees Celsius, global GDP could decrease by up to 10 percent, with the worst impacts in less developed countries. Technology is a vital tool in this context. AI can accelerate sustainability efforts by integrating new sources of renewable energy onto the grid, optimizing energy and water consumption, anticipating weather events, and more. At Microsoft, we focus on three key areas to promote sustainable AI development: optimizing data center energy and water efficiency, advancing low-carbon materials, and improving the energy efficiency of AI. For example, our next-gen data centers use cooling solutions that deliver precise temperature control without water evaporation, significantly reducing water usage and contributing to our sustainability goals. We invite others to join us in leveraging AI for climate progress through continued partnerships.

What are the opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises in Bulgaria to use personalized AI solutions to enhance their competitiveness?

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Bulgaria have significant opportunities to enhance their competitiveness through personalized AI solutions. AI can enrich employee experiences by automating repetitive tasks, allowing employees to focus on more complex and valuable work. It can also reinvent customer engagement by creating personalized experiences, reshape business processes across various functions, and accelerate innovation by speeding up product development. When limited financial resources, implementation complexity and risk aversion hold SMEs back from adopting personalized AI solutions, they should start with readily available AI tools as a first step towards AI transformation. For example, Microsoft 365 Copilot can be used to streamline meetings, manage information, and create documents, addressing language barriers and boosting creativity along the way. By adopting AI, Bulgarian SMEs can significantly enhance their competitiveness and drive growth in the digital age.

How do you see the contribution of artificial intelligence to Bulgaria’s economic development in the context of European and global trends?

Artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly boost Bulgaria’s economic development. AI could increase the economic output of European organizations and entrepreneurs by €2.7 trillion, or 20%, by 2030. The EU’s Digital Decade policy program aims for 75% of European businesses to be using AI, cloud, and big data solutions by 2030. Currently, only 11% have adopted it.
