Head in the Clouds? You’re not the only one

Picture this: all your favourite selfies, dates with mates and family photos saved on your smartphone – which then goes missing one night in the pub. Painful enough to have to sort a new mobile, but imagine the heartache if none of those treasured images are saved elsewhere…

In fact according to latest research, around two thirds of Brits (67%) would rather lose a digital device itself than all the photos and personal content stored ON their device.*

And while it seems an obvious idea to back-up precious digital memories, the same survey also found that 69% of us have important files – including photos – stored on their computer AND NOWHERE ELSE…with around a third (37%) of Brits storing files only on a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet. And if the device was lost or damaged, all those photos and important files would be gone forever.

A simple solution is to back up files in the cloud – something most of us don’t even realise we do pretty much every day. Think of an email account, music library, online photo and document storage and even social networks – they all operate in the cloud.

Microsoft has just revealed its cloud storage service OneDrive – previously SkyDrive – which provides a single place to back up and access files with ease; for example, photos from any Windows, Android or iOS device can be automatically uploaded onto OneDrive, meaning all your cherished digital memories are safe. And even if something was to happen to the device, they will always be held in the cloud, ready to view and share at any time and from any device.

Top T
ips for using
OneDrive

  • Simply share files without the restraints of file sizes and email attachments. It’s possible to easily share files, photos and videos and even folders (like photo albums), without attaching anything. Send an email with a link to only what you share and everything else in your OneDrive stays private.
  • Real time co-authoring makes it easy to create, edit and share documents at the same time as other users. It’s possible to permit others to edit documents too, so you never miss a beat – particularly helpful when managing projects with more than one person.

Where real time co-authoring can help:

  • Renovation projects – keep track of suppliers and finances through Office Online
  • Events – whether you’re planning a wedding or birthday, you can track guest lists and finances through Xcel and Word Online
  • Create gift registries or shopping lists through OneNote so others can add and amend
  • Share school, university and college notes to ensure you stay on top of studies and group work
  • Simultaneously create PowerPoint photo presentations for birthday or anniversary milestones
