Sea of Thieves is the number one game in the UK, according to GfK Entertainment’s chart of physical console videogame sales.

The shared-world adventure game, which sees players take on the role of pirates to sail ships, find treasure and battle each other, was released on March 20 and has topped the official charts in this country.

It has also become the fastest-selling first-party title in a generation and the best-selling Windows 10 game by a Microsoft studio.

In a blog post to mark a week since its release, the head of Rare Studio, which made Sea of Thieves, thanked the more than two million people across the world who have played the game so far.

“Since launching on March 20, we have seen an incredible number of people from around the globe playing and enjoying the game, which has led to some humbling early momentum,” Craig Duncan wrote. “We have watched amazing stories unfold with a number of players working towards becoming our first Pirate Legends.

“We are excited and humbled to see the community grow around the game and we thank you for being part of our crew.”

He also revealed:

  • A million people played Sea of Thieves on the day it was launched
  • More than 100,000 players have streamed the game, resulting in over 10 million hours watched online
  • More than 500,000 new Xbox Live friendships
  • Over 400,000 people have joined an Xbox Club to share their adventures

In Sea of Thieves, gamers complete quests from trading companies with the aim of becoming a “pirate legend”. Reaching this milestone unlocks a new section of the game featuring hideouts, special ships and unique treasures.

Duncan said that players should expect new features in the near future.

“We have been listening to your feedback, so please stay tuned for an upcoming update where we will talk about what we have heard from the community and how Sea of Thieves will evolve based on our vision and player feedback,” he wrote.
