Cloud computing will generate 6.75 million jobs in China and India
According to the research findings, cloud computing will create more job positions for the emerging markets, particularly in China and India. From 2012 to 2015, cloud computing will help these two countries generate a total of 6.75 million jobs. China and India are adopting public cloud computing at unprecedented speed, which accounts for 12% of the global public cloud services (25% of the total IT expenses). There are two main reasons facilitating the cloud-related employment in India and China which include the infrastructure in the countries that stimulates the investment in private cloud computing; while compared to developed countries, emerging markets will not be bound by large legacy system investments. “We tend to think of China and India as emerging markets, but they are actually early adopters of the cloud. They are not bound to existing systems. They’ve skipped that step, so there is less holding them back,” said John F Gantz, chief research officer and senior vice president at IDC.

Figures related to the Asian market in the report are as follows:

  • By 2015, cloud computing will help China and India to create 6.75 million cloud-based jobs in total. China will account for 4 million cloud-related new jobs, an increase of 84%.
  • China and India will contribute nearly half of the new job growth worldwide related to cloud-based services.
  • By 2015, the new jobs categorized by industry in Asia include:
    • Communications and media will be the fastest-growing sectors in Asia. 1.8 million jobs relevant to cloud computing will be created, an increase of 113% compared to 2012.
    • 567 thousand cloud-related jobs in the education sector will be created, an increase of 98% compared to 2012.
    • the government sector will create approximately 315 thousand jobs related to cloud computing, an increase of 75% compared to 2012.
  • By 2015, the new jobs categorized by firms’ size in Asia include:
    • Cloud-related jobs offered by SMEs (under 500 employees) in Asia will achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28%, 2.2% higher than large enterprises (above 500 employees) with a 25.8% growth rate.

Cloud computing helps enterprises save investment costs, better utilizing resources and creating more jobs.
“For most organizations, cloud computing should be a no-brainer, given its ability to increase IT innovation and flexibility, lower capital costs, and help generate revenues that are multiples of spending,” adds John F. Gantz. “A common misperception is cloud computing is a job eliminator, but in truth it will be a job creator — a major one. And job growth will occur across continents and throughout organizations of all sizes because emerging markets, small cities and small businesses have the same access to cloud benefits as large enterprises or developed nations.”

Cloud computing has made significant changes to the existing IT systems of enterprises, freeing up more resources for investment in IT innovation, as well as employing more talent for product sales, financial management, productivity and marketing.

“Microsoft is committed to leading cloud computing development in the industry. In 2009, Microsoft’s worldwide investment in cloud computing reached US$2.3 billion while its R&D investment reached US$9 billion in 2011. Additionally, 75 percent of our engineers are working totally on cloud solutions and services. We believe that there is unlimited potential for cloud computing as the market demand for cloud-based services has kept growing at a fast pace in the last year alone. Cloud computing will be more widely accepted by enterprises in the next few years. Microsoft has closely worked with 2,600 partners to establish a large IT ecosystem, and has created over 53,000 job opportunities in Hong Kong. For every HK$1 Microsoft make in Hong Kong, companies in the ecosystem will make HK$11. With the surging growth of cloud computing, it is expected to bring even more development opportunities, sales revenue and job creation to the industry,” said Peter Yeung, general manager, Microsoft Hong Kong.

As an industry leader, Microsoft is delivering a set of solutions to drive the cloud’s growing and sustainable future. The company offers full public and private cloud solutions for consumers and organizations of all sizes, ranging from platform and infrastructure (Azure, Windows Server) to office software (Office 365), to consumer products (Xbox Live, Hotmail). These enable customers to get the benefits of cloud computing — from connecting and sharing for consumers, to lowering costs and realizing new technical or strategic opportunities for organizations. In cooperation with the government, non-profit-making organizations, and enterprises, Microsoft enables a smooth transition to cloud computing environments by providing cloud training as well as assistance resources for industry professionals.
