Microsoft and Cyberport Join Hands to Promote FinTech development in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, May 4, 2016 – Microsoft Hong Kong and Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited (“Cyberport”) today announced a partnership that joins forces to support financial technology (FinTech) startups in Hong Kong. While Cyberport has announced earlier this year that they will introduce Smart-Space FinTech, a dedicated 3,000-square-meter co-working space for FinTech at Cyberport, Microsoft will offer technological support to FinTech startups through Microsoft’s BizSpark program.

Microsoft Hong Kong and Cyberport will also collaborate closely to offer workshops, training and pitching sessions to help these entrepreneurs understand and use all the available service offerings to enable fast application development. They will also work together to connect promising startups with customers and partners in Hong Kong and the rest of the world.

“In recent years, we are seeing rapid growth of FinTech startups in Hong Kong. As a catalyst for Hong Kong’s digital innovation, Cyberport places an emphasis on FinTech and is striving to foster growth in this sector by paving ways to new opportunities through collaborations with industry partners. By creating synergy between Cyberport’s Smart-Space FinTech, the vibrant creative digital cluster, and Microsoft’s profound expertise in technologies for FinTech, we will provide comprehensive support to help accelerate the Hong Kong FinTech startup community’s growth,” said Herman Lam, CEO of Cyberport.

“Hong Kong is a major global financial center and a regional hub for FinTech innovation. As an industry leader, Microsoft is committed to empowering and growing the local FinTech startup ecosystem by providing the latest technological tools, comprehensive support and market visibility that startups need to succeed. It is our pleasure to join forces with Cyberport to give our backing to the FinTech startup community in Hong Kong, in hopes of fostering a culture of innovation among aspiring entrepreneurs to positively impact the finance industry with their creations,” said Horace Chow, General Manager at Microsoft Hong Kong.

Microsoft’s BlockChain-as-a-Service (BaaS) provides FinTech startups with a rapid, low-cost, low-risk ‘fail-fast’ platform to experiment, develop and deploy BlockChain applications using various distributed ledger technologies and updated tools from 17-plus partners, including Ethereum, Ripple, Eris, STRATO , BitPay, Radium, Algorythmix, and more in a growing list.

BlockChain developers can now even get started to develop decentralized applications (Smart contract) with Solidity using VisualStudio IDE.

Microsoft BizSpark is committed to helping technology startups realize their goals on their own terms, and in the shortest time possible. It is a global program that helps startups succeed by giving free access to Microsoft Azure cloud services, software and support for three years. To enroll in Microsoft BizSpark, a startup may apply directly to Microsoft, or be nominated by a designated BizSpark Partner. The program is available to startups that are privately held, less than five years old and with annual revenues of less than USD1M.
