Many New Zealand parents will have seen their kids playing popular computer game Minecraft.

It’s a deceptively low resolution game involving the building and sometimes destruction of online structures and communities.

It’s also been used in other creative ways including a large and very detailed recreation of Gallipoli at Auckland Museum.

In a surprise move the game was bought by Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion.

But they’re not playing around.

Deirdre Quarnstrom, Microsoft’s General Manager of Minecraft Education joins RadioLIVE’s Vaughn Davis to explore the game and the impact it has on the kids playing it.

The free Minecraft Hour of Code tutorial built by Deirdre’s team has introduced nearly 100 million people to coding in the last three years.

Vaughn explores whether education was always the end game and how New Zealand schools are using the software.
