Jakarta, 7 May 2024 – In the heart of Indonesia’s bustling business landscape, a digital revolution is underway. With a population exceeding 278 million as of mid-2023* and internet usage surpassing 200 million individuals**, the nation stands on the cusp of an artificial intelligence (AI) revolution that promises to accelerate economic growth. Based on Kearney’s projections, AI has the potential to add almost US$366 billion to Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030.

In Indonesia, three trailblazing companies — BUMA, DANA, and TELKOM— have taken part in AI transformation. They recognized the transformational capabilities of AI and integrated them into their daily operations to propel themselves into the future. During the recent Microsoft Build: AI Day Jakarta, their stories with Copilot for Microsoft 365 and GitHub Copilot were highlighted.

“As an indispensable part of the Indonesian essentials industry, BUMA, DANA, and TELKOM’s transformation are not only charting their own path to business, but also fundamentally transforming Indonesia’s society and economy function. We are humbled to assist them in their AI transformation journey, democratizing AI to ensure that its capabilities are experienced by all,” said Dharma Simorangkir, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia.

BUMA: Unearthing Efficiency and Sustainability

As one of Indonesia’s largest mining contractors, BUMA understands the value of productivity. Their workforce of nearly 12,000 employees spans various departments, spread across 11 mining sites, each with unique needs. To optimize workflows and improve productivity, BUMA turned to Copilot for Microsoft 365 and rolled it out to 100 employees in its pilot stage, prioritizing those that require intensive use of collaborative tools.

“This is the kind of transformation we’re seeing today with AI-powered tools in the business environment. Similar to how typewriters are evolving into word processors, Copilot technology is setting a new standard for how we interact with data and execute tasks. These tools integrate seamlessly with our essential applications, automating repetitive tasks, correcting errors, and uncovering features we might not even be aware of. They not only save time but also enhance the quality of our work across the board—from perfecting formulas in spreadsheets to ensuring grammatical precision in documents and enhancing the aesthetic coherence of presentations,” explained Edwin Rene Asparsayogi, IT General Manager, BUMA.

After two months of trials, Copilot for Microsoft 365 has gone on to become an indispensable companion for BUMA’s workforce.

“Using Copilot-powered tools is like stepping into a new era of work where efficiency and accuracy are significantly enhanced. Like how most people would use a word processor today, in a few years, we might find it unimaginable to work without the aid of intelligent tools like these,” Edwin added.

As BUMA digs deeper into the capabilities of Generative AI and uncover new features, BUMA is poised to extract maximum value from its digital toolkit. The possibilities are aplenty – optimizing operations on the basis of data can help the company reduce its environmental footprint and contribute to sustainable practices, as reflected in the company’s recent efforts to diversify its portfolio into lower carbon commodities.

DANA: Financial Services at The Speed of AI

DANA, an Indonesian technology financial company with over 180 million users, has been at the forefront of digital payment solutions, most recently incorporating AI to innovate and realize its noble vision of financial inclusion.

Acknowledging the rise of Generative AI, Norman Sasono, Chief Technology Officer, DANA, said “We believe that AI can extend an individual’s capabilities, catapult productivity, and ultimately help in envisioning inclusive digital payment and services.”

DANA is one of the first companies to launch a companywide initiative called ‘AI Everywhere’ in 2023, aimed at boosting workforce productivity and bringing digital payments and services within everyone’s reach. As part of this initiative, DANA has integrated Copilot for Microsoft 365 to automate content creation tasks and streamline email management.

According to Norman, “Copilot for Microsoft 365 has significantly improved communication efficiency within the company. I have personally benefitted from spending less time dealing with email. With this high time efficiency, we can focus more on strategic planning, allowing us to make better decisions and steer our success.”

DANA recently also utilizes Azure OpenAI Service to enhance its digital chatbot technology, DIANA. This implementation has resulted in more accurate responses and predictions, thereby improving customer interactions and satisfaction, facilitating more financial transactions, and empowering more individuals to contribute to the economy.

TELKOM: Reaching New Heights of Coding Excellence

PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (TELKOM), the nation’s largest telecommunications provider, knows that quality code forms the backbone of its digital infrastructure. In mid-2023, they embraced GitHub Copilot, the world’s most widely adopted AI developer tool, deploying it to 260 developers in the organization. The results are no less than astounding.

“Early-stage usage data reveals that our developers already accept 20–30 percent of Copilot’s code suggestions. This acceptance rate demonstrates growing confidence in the tool’s capabilities. As engineers witness the accuracy and relevance of Copilot’s contributions, they become more efficient. Tasks that once took hours now require significantly less time, allowing us to deliver software faster and respond swiftly to market demands,” explained TELKOM’s Executive Vice President Digital Business & Technology, Komang Aryasa. The findings align with GitHub’s analysis of over 900,000 GitHub Copilot users indicating a 30% acceptance rate for code suggestions, and further increases as developers grow more accustomed to the tool.

GitHub Copilot has revolutionized TELKOM’s development process by suggesting code snippets, correcting syntax, and even proposing optimized solutions. Freed from mundane tasks, TELKOM’s developers can now channel their energy into solving intricate logic problems and play a significant role in fostering digital unity.
