Microsoft Korea accelerates the innovation of shipbuilding and marine industry with Samsung Heavy Industries

November 29, 2021 – Microsoft Korea and Samsung Heavy Industries signed a strategic partnership to transform digital shipyard. Through the partnership, Samsung Heavy Industries will accelerate its transformation to build low-cost and high-efficiency shipyard by utilizing IT solutions and technology know-how based on Microsoft Cloud.

Samsung Heavy Industries has established digital transformation strategy named ‘Smart SHI (Smart Samsung Heavy Industries)’ since 2019 and has been promoting business innovation by utilizing digital technology across all areas of the shipyard including design, purchase, and production.

Samsung Heavy Industries is transforming into a ‘Paperless Yard’ by building a mobile work environment based on high-speed wireless networks of Geoje Shipyard and it is focusing on productivity enhancement by utilizing Microsoft’s technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), intelligent production system using data automation technology, and repetitive task automation through RPA (Robotic Process Automation).

By utilizing Microsoft Cloud Azure, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Microsoft solution Teams, and metaverse technology, Samsung Heavy Industries also plans to streamline its workflow more by gathering scattered data and information together in a digital virtual space and establishing a powerful collaboration system.

Jin-han Bae, Director & Head-Management Support(CFO) at Samsung Heavy Industries, said, “Digital transformation, which processes all information from shipyard with advanced IT technology, is the ultimate goal of ‘Smart SHI’” and stressed, “This will be a strong competitive edge in realizing Samsung Heavy Industries’ sustainability along with super-gap eco-friendly technology.”
