Hackathons help one college senior find opportunities, mentors and a job

When Cassidy Williams was an eighth-grader she taught herself how to build website. Almost a decade later, the Iowa State University senior, 22, has made a presentation to the United Nations and is such a winning veteran of hackathons that she’s now a co-organizer of the International Women’s Hackathon 2014 set for April 25 – 27.

The second annual International Women’s Hackathon, which begins Friday and runs through April 27, provides an environment to explore computing and is designed to encourage university women worldwide to become technological innovators and help solve global-scale problems.

Brazilian professor inspires students to participate in the International Women’s Hackathon 2014

In her desire to increase the number of women in computer science programs, professor Rosiane de Freitas made sure the Institute of Computing of the Federal University of Amazonas (ICOMP/UFAM) was the first Brazilian university to take part in last year’s inaugural International Women’s Hackathon, mentoring a group of girls who participated in the event. This year, de Freitas has inspired other female students to participate in the International Women’s Hackathon 2014.

Facebook and Microsoft partner on hackathon

“A number of our engineers, along with Facebook’s engineers, will be there working with everyone to show how you can easily get deep integration across Windows and Windows Phone apps,” writes Steve Guggenheimer in a blog post. “We’ll be offering 1:1 assistance along with some great speakers that will help jumpstart any app efforts you have.”

Bing honors veterans with hackathon
