Bill Gates discusses ways to help students succeed in higher education

During his keynote speech at today’s Microsoft Research Faculty Summit, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates discussed some of the challenges helping students stay on track and complete their higher education goals. Digital tools can make a difference, he said, providing ways to monitor students’ progress toward career goals and even trigger a counselor to contact students who are falling behind.

Today and tomorrow, 400 elite academic researchers from 200 institutions and 29 countries will join Microsoft Research to explore hot trends and burning issues in computer science research. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates will set the Summit’s tone by addressing how computing can help solve global problems as the event’s opening keynote speaker – the first time he’s been back in that role since 2005.

Nearly half of developers skip security practices, study shows

A Trust in Computing survey released by Microsoft revealed that 44 percent of developers don’t use a secure application program or process in developing their applications. Security development practices are easy to adopt, and Microsoft provides free, downloadable tools and guidance on its Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) website.
