Microsoft applauds the New Zealand Government’s new Cyber Security Strategy 2026–2030, which arrives at a critical time and provides a clear roadmap to safeguard New Zealand’s digital way of life – particularly as cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated in the new AI era.

Liz FitchHead of Government Affairs for Microsoft Australia and New Zealand, recently visited Wellington to discuss digital transformation and cyber security with leaders across the public and private sectors. She welcomed the Government’s strategy as a robust blueprint for the country’s future, noting, “Cyber security is not just about defence against threats; it’s fundamental to innovation and economic growth. The Government’s new Cyber Security Strategy is a visionary plan that recognises no single organisation can tackle modern cyber challenges alone. By prioritising awareness, resilience and collaboration across society, it will set New Zealand up for success as a secure and prosperous digital nation. Microsoft is proud to work alongside government, businesses and communities to help make this vision a reality.”

The strategy’s four objectives – Understand, Prevent & Prepare, Respond and Partner – closely align with Microsoft’s own approach to cyber security. Its focus on boosting cyber awareness and strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure and government systems reflects our own belief that robust security and preparedness must be built into every layer of the digital economy and requires whole-of-society collaboration.

Microsoft is already investing in New Zealand’s digital resilience and innovation. Microsoft’s Azure New Zealand data centre region, the country’s first hyperscale public cloud region, is providing local organisations with secure cloud services and onshore data storage, addressing key data protection needs for government and critical sectors. It was also the first cloud region certified by New Zealand’s Government Chief Digital Officer for meeting public sector security standards, giving agencies confidence to adopt new technologies without compromising security or compliance.

In an interconnected world, New Zealand’s cyber security leadership, including its commitment to international cyber norms, sets an example for others. Microsoft shares this outlook and will continue to bring global expertise in cloud, AI and threat intelligence to support New Zealand’s cyber security journey. The Cyber Security Strategy 2026–2030 is a call to action for all of us to work together to protect and empower New Zealand’s digital future. Microsoft is proud to be a partner in this effort and remains committed to helping New Zealand achieve a secure and innovative digital economy for everyone.
