At Microsoft’s AI Leadership Summit in Kuala Lumpur, leaders across Malaysia’s public and private sectors explored how organizations are moving from AI experimentation to achieving transformation at enterprise scale to drive measurable business impact, a shift known as Frontier Transformation.

Organizations are now bringing AI closer to core workflows to automate routine execution, support complex decision‑making, and enable employees to focus on higher‑value activities such as setting targets, defining standards, and evaluating outcomes.

YAB Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), who delivered the keynote, shared, “The question before us is no longer whether AI will transform our economy, because that transformation is already underway. The greater question is how Malaysia will be shaped by this transformation, and how we choose to lead in the emerging AI economy. Becoming a truly AI-driven nation requires more than adopting technology. It requires a society that can use AI confidently, institutions that govern and deploy it responsibly at scale, and ecosystems that translate innovation into meaningful impact for the rakyat.”

Driving AI innovation: Moving from experimentation to execution

At the Summit, Microsoft highlighted how it is partnering organizations in Malaysia on their cloud and AI transformation journeys:

  • DKSH is demonstrating how AI can simplify complexity for large, distributed enterprises. Leveraging Microsoft’s Azure AI technologies and Microsoft Copilot, DKSH is embedding AI into core order‑processing workflows to improve speed, accuracy, and decision quality across multiple markets. The result is a more scalable, resilient operating model that allows teams to focus on higher‑value decisions rather than routine execution.
  • Johor Corporation (JCorp) is strengthening operational cohesion across its diverse portfolio by building a unified digital core to support greater connectivity, governance, and decision-making across the Group. By establishing a single source of truth across its businesses, JCorp is reducing silos, enabling leaders to make faster, data‑driven decisions while maintaining strong governance and security. As part of its broader AI-first agenda, JCorp is embedding AI-enabled workflows into everyday operations to drive productivity, scalability, and responsible adoption across its ecosystem, supported by its collaboration with Microsoft.
  • Malaysia’s Inland Revenue Board (LHDNM) is spearheading a structural transformation of Malaysia’s tax administration through the rollout of the national e-invoicing platform, MyInvois, launched on 1 August 2024. This marks a decisive shift from periodic to real-time digital reporting. Enabled by cloud infrastructure and machine learning-driven analytics, MyInvois enhances LHDNM’s ability to process data at scale and detect anomalies, delivering faster, more precise tax administration while supporting informed, data-driven decision-making at the national level.
  • PETRONAS is collaborating with Microsoft on advancing AI and analytical platforms to support digital transformation across the business. This includes exploring technologies such as cloud, advanced analytics, and emerging AI capabilities to enhance decision-making and operational efficiency.

Advancing AI adoption with in-country data residency in Malaysia

As organizations move from experimentation to execution, the ability to scale AI securely and responsibly becomes increasingly important.

One year since the launch of the Malaysia West cloud region, Microsoft has made more than 190 services generally available to commercial customers in Malaysia, supporting cloud and AI-enabled workloads with lower latency, in-country data residency, and enhanced governance capabilities.

With data residency now available in the Malaysia West cloud region, Microsoft is enabling organizations to innovate with AI while maintaining greater control over their data. Through the Microsoft 365 Advanced Data Residency (ADR) add-on, organizations can now keep their productivity and collaboration data, including Microsoft 365 and Microsoft 365 Copilot, within Malaysia.

For organizations operating across borders, Microsoft 365 Multi-Geo capabilities further enable them to manage data location across multiple markets while maintaining a unified and connected operating model, streamlining governance and improving compliance. Together, these capabilities provide Malaysian organizations with the flexibility and control needed to accelerate AI adoption securely, while meeting both local and regional data requirements.

Expanding whole-of-nation skilling to strengthen Malaysia’s AI readiness

As organizations adapt to AI‑enabled ways of working, the strength of Malaysia’s future workforce will depend on how skills are developed early, consistently, and in ways that reflect real‑world needs.

To support this, Microsoft and Malaysia’s Ministry of Digital launched Microsoft Elevate, an expanded national AI capacity-building initiative aligned with the country’s AI Nation 2030 ambitions. Delivered in partnership with the National AI Office (NAIO), National TVET Council Secretariat, Biji-biji Initiative & Mereka, this initiative broadens the scope of Malaysia’s AI skilling agenda to include educators, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), retired servicemen and women, learning institutions, and members of the civil service.

Microsoft Elevate aims to follow a phased roadmap through 2030 that progresses from skilling and workforce activation, through sector deepening, to institutionalization and long-term sustainability. As part of its pilot phase launched earlier this year, Microsoft Elevate has already reached 80,000 learners, supporting Malaysia’s journey toward more inclusive and responsible AI adoption.

Laurence Si, Managing Director, Microsoft Malaysia, said, “As Malaysia advances its ambition to become a regional digital leader, the focus is shifting from deploying AI tools to building AI‑ready institutions and enterprises. By combining trusted in‑country infrastructure with responsible AI innovation, Malaysia can accelerate the growth of frontier firms that drive long‑term economic competitiveness. Microsoft remains committed to working closely with government, industry, and ecosystem partners to advance trusted AI adoption, build digital talent and capabilities, as well as empower organizations to thrive in the AI economy.”

One year on from the launch of the Malaysia West cloud region, the momentum seen across government agencies and enterprises signals a maturing phase of AI adoption in Malaysia. Microsoft’s latest AI Diffusion report shows AI adoption in the country rose to 21.8% in Q1 2026 (vs 19.7% in H2 2025). As organizations scale AI more deeply into operations, the availability of trusted, in‑country cloud capabilities continues to play a supporting role—providing the security, governance, and confidence needed to innovate responsibly and sustain long‑term impact.
