How Wipro’s L&D function turned to AI to make learning personal at scale

When Surya Prakash Mohapatra first logged into iSkill, the AI agent Wipro built inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, he expected a course recommendation. Instead, it showed him record of every course he had ever completed. “I had forgotten about so many of them,” says Mohapatra, General Manager and AI Learning head – Talent Skilling, Wipro.

That quiet surprise, echoed by associates across Wipro, captures what the L&D team has been building since December 2025: a conversational agent that works as a personal mentor atop Wipro’s AI Academy.

Promise: A guide for a content-rich academy

Wipro’s AI Academy, built three years ago to make over 240,000 associates AI-ready, offers 144 persona-based learning paths and hundreds of AI and cloud courses from thousands of partner platforms.

“While there were plenty of learning paths, employees were not sure where to start,” says Mohapatra. “The experience was fragmented, dependent on search and reading through course descriptions. Only a small percentage asked for suggestions and adoption suffered.”

That was the mandate behind iSkill, an intelligent layer that guides each associate to the right course, based on their role and what they have already learned.

Proof: How iSkill actually works

Behind a simple chat window sits a layered system built entirely on the Microsoft stack. The agent reaches associates through Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams. When an associate signs in through their Wipro Teams identity, a Microsoft Fabric Data Agent pulls their profile from two internal datasets. First, based on role, band, function and skills, and second, around completed AI and cloud certifications. A Power BI semantic model fetches the data; the agent then walks the SharePoint-hosted Academy catalogue and surfaces the courses that fit.

For an agent that draws on employee data to make recommendations, trust is built into iSkill from the ground up. “There are two guardrails. Access is controlled at the door and the data each person sees is controlled by who they are,” Mohapatra explains. Access is gated by a validated security group and role-based controls in the PowerBI model ensure a manager can plan for a role but never look up an individual. “iSkill is a personal learning advocate, not a surveillance tool,” he adds.

Productivity: What changed, in numbers and behavior

Between January 2025 and March 2026, 96 percent of AI Advanced+ courses at the academy were completed.

But for Mohapatra, the real measure of success is something that numbers don’t show. “As an L&D function, we now have greater confidence that there is genuine alignment between learning and business priorities. The recommendations are role-focused,” he says.

Ask him how iSkill shapes career progression and he recalls, “A delivery manager was moving to a new project and was unsure of what skills the new domain and clients would demand. He turned to iSkill and found the right courses.”

Where the academy was once a library associates walked alone, each now has a guide that knows where they have been and where they could go next.

I get very well-structured recommendations aligned with my role and band. For me, the suggested AI learning paths and skill focus areas have been relevant, especially around Gen AI and automation. iSkill makes it easier to identify the right upskilling priorities.
