Learning can be an exciting journey filled with creativity. Minecraft Education proves just that – combining education and play to create fun ways for children to learn and feel involved in the learning process. Minecraft Education is a game-based learning platform that allows educators and students to explore, create, and collaborate in immersive 3D worlds. It offers a variety of curriculum-aligned lessons and activities that cover subjects such as science, math, history, language arts, and more. It also supports social-emotional learning, digital citizenship, and computational thinking.

Bringing the Minecraft Education experience to life in Malaysia

In a collaboration between Malaysia’s Ministry of Education, Sunway Malls, and Microsoft, the Minecraft Education experience was brought to life in Sunway Malls across Malaysia via Minecraft Mall Discovery.

Minecraft Mall Discovery featured a series of events that took place in selected Sunway Malls across Klang Valley, Johor, and Penang from June to October 2023, providing a gamut of activities, workshops, playgrounds, and challenges, all centered around Minecraft Education.

Students from selected schools also had the chance to attend classes at the Minecraft Education Corner, guided by Microsoft Global Training Partners and Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts.

Embracing sustainability in the 2023 Minecraft Education Challenge

The 2023 Minecraft Education Challenge was also conducted as part of the Minecraft Mall Discovery program, with the theme “Sustainable Shopping Mall of the Future”, providing an opportunity for school students to unleash their creativity to transform a shopping mall into something more sustainable and fitting for a greener future. The competition attracted more than 3,600 submissions among primary and secondary school students across the country.

What makes this challenge particularly beneficial for students is its ability to transform learning into a fun and engaging experience. It not only imparts a deeper understanding of sustainability but also familiarizes students with the pressing global challenges we face today. Moreover, it fosters critical thinking and encourages students to approach the design of innovative, viable solutions that bring benefits to both society and the planet.

The 2023 Minecraft Education Challenge inspired Malaysian students to think big and build even bigger. Muhammad Adam Wafeeq Bin Mohd Zulhafiz, a student from Sekolah Kebangsaan Tasik Puteri 2, won Best Video with his Sunway NESTOPIA project.

His winning design featured a mall that harmoniously blends sustainability with futuristic concepts, demonstrating the platform’s potential to build awareness on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in an engaging way.

Reflecting on his experience, Adam said, “Using Minecraft Education was an exciting experience. The game offers coding or command code functions in programming languages where I can enhance my computational and logical abilities in solving problems. It also makes learning more fun.”

The competition’s focus on sustainability and forward-thinking mirrors Minecraft Education’s commitment to nurturing a generation of students who are not only academically proficient but also environmentally conscious. It encourages students to engage critically with global challenges and devise solutions that not only showcase innovation but are also feasible and beneficial for both society and the planet.

Minecraft Education’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility is evident in its expansion to Chromebooks, ensuring that more students can benefit from its educational offerings regardless of their location or learning environment. This adaptability is particularly valuable in today’s diverse educational landscape, where remote and hybrid learning have become increasingly common.

The future of learning with AI

As technology evolves, so does education. When the pandemic struck, educators all across Asia pivoted rapidly to remote classrooms, to ensure education is not disrupted. This helped educators who previously did not consider technology in the classroom to now venture further into how technology can help improve the learning experience.

As we head into a future with AI, more tools are being created with educators in mind. At Microsoft, we are committed to supporting educators and students with innovative solutions that leverage AI to enhance teaching and learning. One such example is Copilot with Bing, a chatbot that can help educators find relevant and reliable information on the web using natural language.

As more AI-powered tools are introduced, educators will need to adapt and learn skills to best leverage these tools in their classrooms. To support the upskilling of educators on this front, Microsoft developed AI for Educators, a course on Microsoft Learn designed to help educators understand the basics of AI and provide guidance on how it can be applied in the education process.

If you are an educator interested in bringing technology into your classroom, we have developed eight how-to guides for educators to quickly get started with Microsoft Education classroom technology solutions.
