An encouraging step forward: Welcoming New Zealand’s first national AI strategy
Attributable to Vanessa Sorenson, Managing Director of Microsoft New Zealand:
“We welcome the Government’s national strategy for artificial intelligence, which outlines an innovative and practical framework that will enable New Zealand to harness the transformative social and economic potential of AI.
“The strategy outlines an approach that will catch New Zealand up with global peers, with a strong emphasis on productivity, innovation and international alignment – principles Microsoft has long championed in its work with government, industry and the education sector. Just last month, we published a report that outlined where New Zealand can best invest its resources for outsized returns as it seeks to capitalise on the opportunities presented by the new AI economy.
“We’re encouraged to see the Government’s strategy reflect the ambition and agility that defines New Zealand’s tech ecosystem, which aligns closely with our own investments at Microsoft. From our hyperscale cloud region to our AI Academy program, we’re committed to helping New Zealand unlock the full potential of AI – sustainably, securely and inclusively.
“The strategy also highlights the opportunity for the public sector to lead by example in AI adoption, and we believe New Zealand’s public service is uniquely positioned to model responsible and impactful AI use. With its scale, agility and collaborative spirit, it can set the tone for how AI improves lives, from streamlining services to enhancing healthcare and education.
“We look forward to working alongside Government and industry partners to support the strategy’s implementation and ensure AI delivers impactful benefits for all New Zealanders.”
