Microsoft Research Silicon Valley has focused on distributed computing since its founding 12 years ago. Inside Microsoft Research reports that scientists from there are sharing advances in finding solution to those challenges at SOSP 2013, the Association for Computing Machinery’s 24th annual Symposium on Operating System Principles, Nov. 3 to 6 in Pennsylvania.

On Oct. 30, during Innovation Day 2013 at Microsoft Research Asia, a demo called 3-D Scanning with Mobile Devices set up an intriguing premise: making 3D printing more accessible to the masses.

The latest “Microsoft Research Luminaries” episode focuses on Jeannette Wing, corporate vice president of Microsoft Research. Wing oversees Microsoft Research’s core research laboratories around the world.

TouchDevelop provides a cross-platform programming environment where developers can write scripts by tapping on the screen. Cloud sessions – an available feature in TouchDevelop – provide a simple way to save data in the cloud and to share data between different devices, automatically synchronizing the shared data between participants of the same session.

Shortly after the July release of the Lab of Things — a research platform that makes it easy to deploy interconnected devices in multiple homes, then share individual research data with other investigators, turning it into a large-scale study — a group of students from University College London (UCL) started poking around the code.
