Microsoft announces upcoming name change for Windows Azure

On Tuesday, Microsoft announced that, effective April 3, Windows Azure will be renamed Microsoft Azure. “This change reflects Microsoft’s strategy and focus on Azure as the public cloud platform for customers as well as for our own services Office 365, Dynamics CRM, Bing, OneDrive, Skype, and Xbox Live,” writes Steven Martin, Windows Azure Marketing & Operations general manager.

Italy’s Lombardia region uses open data on Windows Azure to build for the future

The Lombardia region in northern Italy has recently earned a reputation as a leader in Europe’s open data movement, launching dati.lombardia.it. Powered by the Socrata Open Data Portal running on Windows Azure, it hosts more than 430 datasets and visualizations on a range of topics, from museum locations for visitors to government spending information.

Windows Azure, Microsoft Dynamics and Enterprise Services earn a place on the podium at the Winter Games

Many records were broken at the Winter Games, but Microsoft can claim credit for helping to break at least one more: The largest-ever audience on an authenticated stream for any sporting event in history. More than 2.1 million people tuned in to watch NBC Sports Digital’s coverage of Team USA versus Canada in the semifinal hockey game, thanks in part to Microsoft’s public cloud platform – Windows Azure.
