Dr. Samran Thongpaeng, Vice President for planning and development, University of Phayao, received a commemorative trophy from Mr. Lalit Mohan, Solution Specialist – Education, Microsoft Corporation in recognition of the successful collaboration between Microsoft and University of Phayao – Thailand’s first university to adopt Microsoft Azure cloud technology for IT systems management.

Bangkok – 11 January 2016 – Microsoft Thailand joined forces with LannaCom to provide University of Phayao with Microsoft Azure, a cutting-edge cloud technology. This collaboration is part of Microsoft’s efforts to empower the education sector in the country, helping educational organizations embrace Thailand’s Digital Economy policy and prepare for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

“At University of Phayao, one of our main missions is to develop human resources across all levels in accordance with Thailand Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (TQF: HEd). This means we must produce graduates who have good interpersonal skills, moral values and ethics, as well as practical understanding of numerical analysis, communication and information technology. At the same time, we need to pay attention to the professional development of our instructors and the enhancement of academic standards,” said Professor Dr. Mondhon Sanguansermsri, Dean, University of Phayao.  “To accomplish these goals, University of Phayao has to efficiently manage IT systems in order to meet global standards. This mean we must keep our IT systems up to date to maintain the quality of education for our students and deliver smooth work flow for university staff, which is no easy task. That’s why we decided to invest in Microsoft’s cloud technology, Microsoft Azure.”

“The adoption of Microsoft’s cloud technology will help raise student and staff productivity as we work towards accomplishing our mission. Together with LannaCom Limited, we upgraded the university’s IT systems – starting with the management of IT resources and services, such as registration systems, staff email (UP Mail), student email (UP Live Mail), archiving, access to genuine Microsoft software for university staff and students, and classes conducted via Live Broadcast (iClassroom). Because of our commitment to IT systems development, University of Phayao has become the first institute of higher education in Thailand to adopt Microsoft’s cloud technology,” added Professor Dr. Mondhon.

“We want staff and students to be able to access and manage information quickly and systematically. This was achieved by moving our data from on-premises servers to Microsoft’s cloud platform, which also provides us with database and virtual machine services. Additionally, we adopted the Windows Server Datacenter operating system, suitable for enterprise-grade operations. We also plan to implement Disaster Recovery service to ensure that all data remains safe at all times.”

Microsoft Azure can support the university’s operations with minimum fuss and virtually no limitation, providing full scalability, strong privacy and security, and exceptional reliability with a baseline uptime rate of 99.95%. Azure’s outstanding flexibility allows it to support all technology standards – be it open source or Microsoft’s proprietary solutions. Additionally, Microsoft’s cloud services come complete with world-class security and privacy standards – including ISO 27001 and European Union certifications. Today, 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies are on the Microsoft Cloud.

Mr. Teerachet Nantsupawat, Managing Director, LannaCom

“As Microsoft’s partner and IT consultant for University of Phayao, LannaCom deployed Microsoft Azure as the foundation for two key service categories – namely the Learning Management System for university staff and students, and other services available on the university website. We will definitely recommend Microsoft Azure to other academic organizations in Northern Thailand,” said Mr. Teerachet Nantsupawat, Managing Director at LannaCom Co.,Ltd.

Mr. Somsak Mukdavannakorn, Public Sector Director, Microsoft Thailand, said, “As we delve into the digital era, the need to transform is felt by both business and education sectors. Microsoft’s innovations can empower every organization in Thailand to achieve more and help them embrace emerging trends such as Cloud, Mobility and Big Data, while also taking into account security and privacy needs. The collaboration between University of Phayao and Microsoft underlines Microsoft Azure’s capability in modernizing academic institutions to meet the demands of Thailand’s Digital Economy. As a result, University of Phayao can take full advantage of an IT system that is fast, flexible and cost-efficient. Microsoft continues to collaborate with partners to transform and modernize Thai education by addressing various needs that range from classroom activities, administrative tasks and student data management, to coursework materials and long-distance learning.”
