As the 4th Industrial Revolution draws closer, the need to transform the way we learn has become more crucial. Digital skills have become a necessity in jobs that previously did not require them, marking a significant shift in the way jobs are viewed today.
In a bid to prepare their students with the necessary digital competencies and build a future ready workforce, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has embarked on a journey with Microsoft Malaysia to provide data science training to its students through the ‘Microsoft Professional Program for Data Science Curriculum’ (MPP).
“Data science is one of the most important areas in the 21st century. As we know, it is just like the next oil. Everything that we do, across the board, we need data; data to help us make decisions and data to help us predict what the future is going to be.”

UTeM is the first among 20 public universities in Malaysia to pilot MPP. The execution of this curriculum in UTeM also makes it the largest MPP curriculum to have ever been rolled out in the education world, with over 250 students from the first batch to go through the curriculum and to receive data science certificates from Microsoft. This effort is also in line with Malaysia’s vision to produce 20,000 data scientists by the year 2020.
