Why you should be excited for the new Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

The time has come – the free Windows 10 Fall Creators Update begins rolling out to all Windows 10 users, from today.

Before we jump into all the reasons why you should be looking forward to Microsoft’s latest feature-packed update, we should mention that a new Surface Book 2 and Mixed Reality Headset launches have also been revealed – just in case you fancy a quick look at some shiny new hardware.

Up to date? Good. Let’s jump straight into some Windows 10 goodness, complete with a few musings from Head of the Windows Insider Program, Dona Sarkar.

Remix your life
If you’re a proud cat owner, then chances are you’ve got at least 5-10GB’s worth of photos and videos starring your precious Mr. Bojangles. Trouble is, with so many memories, you’re unlikely to sift through everything to pick and choose the best shots that do his fuzzy face justice.

The Fall Creators Update fixes this dilemma in one fell swoop, thanks to the new Video Remix feature, which cleverly chooses the best clips (or ones that you select), before automatically editing them together, sprinkling in special 3D effects, and presenting them to you with zero effort on your part.

Gone are the days of slaving away in front of complicated editing software. Now you, your cat (and anything else that happens to be in your local or cloud media library) can be shown off in style, with the added bonus of making you look like a video editing prodigy.

“Insiders are huge fans of the 3D effects in the Video Remix feature in the new Photos app”, says Dona Sarkar. “They love the ability to have the intelligence of the app take photos and videos across all of their devices, which makes us all look like we know what we’re doing with video editing.”

Throw in the ability to doodle directly onto videos and have them saved instantly, users can crank up their creativity in an instant, with no extra programs or skills required.

3D made easy
“Imagine any object”, Sarkar says. “Anything you can think of, any shape you like. Now tell me, is it in 2D or 3D?”

Our brains think in 3D. It’s the world we live in, and creating and manipulating objects in 3D is one of the best ways to express our creativity. Sarkar herself, whose passion also lies in fashion design, uses Windows 10’s 3D features to design and bring her visions to life.

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update itself lets anyone create in three dimensions, with Paint 3D, allowing users to easily manipulate objects and share them with others.

The latest update brings with it the ability to import 3D creations into PowerPoint Presentations and Word documents, and there’s even an option to animate 3D objects to add extra style to presentations.

“Morph Transition in PowerPoint is amazing”, Sarkar continues. “It makes me look like I know exactly what I’m doing with PowerPoint, without me even trying. I love it when technology does that”.

Coupled with the Mixed Reality 3D viewer which allows objects and creations to be dropped into the physical world using nothing but your device and its rear camera (and the use of Mixed Reality Headsets to bring you even closer to the action), the new Fall Creators Update serves up the power of 3D like never before.

Peace of mind
“How many times have you had a family member ring up, telling you they clicked on a link in an email, and now their PC is acting strangely?” Dona asks. For most of us, this is an all-too-familiar experience.

Thankfully, the Fall Creators Update should put an end to trigger-happy clicking mishaps, thanks to a new security feature which opens links in a special Edge browser window which acts as a walled sandbox – similar to a virtual environment – which is entirely self-contained.

This means that any detrimental links which may be designed to cause harm to your PC are neutralised, safely and easily. If you’re the go-to tech support guru in your family, then the Fall Creators Update is the godsend you’ve been waiting for.

Up your game
Gaming has also never been more popular on Windows, with over 200 million monthly active users gaming on Windows 10, and with the explosion of interest in eSports and interactive game streaming, more people watch gameplay than ever.

Microsoft has already launched Mixer – the only near real-time, interactive game streaming service, to help everyone broadcast, watch or interact with other gamers.

With the Fall Creators Update, Mixer becomes even better – people can now launch and jump into a game stream faster than before. Game Mode also enables developers to access all the power of the PC and dedicate it to games, delivering an amazing gaming experience on Windows 10.

The next era of gaming is upon us, with the new improvements in the Fall Creators Update, immersive gaming experiences for Mixed Reality, and the upcoming launch of the Xbox One X on 7 November.

“The journey Windows 10 users are taking will see everything they use get better with each update” Sarkar says, and the Fall Creators Update is certainly no exception.
