4月16日、学生やスタートアップ、エンジニア他、多くのイノベーターを対象としたイベント「Microsoft Innovation Day 2018」を東京で開催しました。このイベントでは世界最大級の学生ITコンテストである「Imagine Cup 2018日本予選大会決勝」と、テクノロジによるイノベーションを表彰するコンテストである「Microsoft Innovation Award」が実施されました。
■ Imagine Cup 2018日本予選大会
今年のImagine Cup 2018 日本予選では、先端技術を用いた作品が多く集まりました。そして、選考を経た、10チームがImagine Cup日本予選大会決勝へと進出しました。また今回、技術を競い合う学生のチャレンジを応援するPreferred Networks 様 が共催パートナーとして協力され、選考へ勝ち進んだチームへの技術セッションやメンタリングを、弊社テクニカルエバンジェリストによるメンタリングとともに合わせて実施頂きました。
7月にシアトルで行われるImagine Cup の世界大会進出を目指して行った各チームのプレゼンテーションはいずれも情熱に溢れ、最終的に下記の３チームが世界大会への切符を見事手にしました。

- ezaki-lab （鳥羽商船高等専門学校）
マダイやシマアジなどの海面養殖の自動給餌でコスト削減、収益拡大を実現する人工知能システム。 - Mediated Ear （東京大学）
Deep Neural Network を利用して、さまざまな音が混ざった入力音源から特定の人の音声のみを抽出するソフトウェア。 - Team Emergensor （東京大学）
スマートフォンから取得したデータを基に、非常事態の発生を自動検出することで、危険情報の迅速な集団的共有を実現するサービス。
出場各チームの技術レベルは大変高く、AI、MR、Big Dataなどの近年注目を集める技術領域を活用しており、これらの技術が、世の中の人々を助けるためにどのように使えるか、深く熟考されていました。
■ Microsoft Innovation Award
今年のMicrosoft Innovation Awardではマイクロソフトも力を入れているIoT、AI、MR、量子コンピュータなどの最新のテクノロジ分野で多くの興味深いソリューションの応募が多くありました。その中で下記の企業が最優秀賞・優秀賞に輝きました。

これらのソリューションはマイクロソフトのサービスとは異なる長所を持ち、ビジネスの面でも今後マイクロソフトとの協業が期待できるのではないかと考えています。例えば、マイクロソフトは現在クラウドにおいてIntelligent Cloud、Intelligent Edgeという考え方を掲げており、EdgeでのAIの活用を推進していますが、容量が小さいEdgeデバイスへAIモデルのデプロイが困難なケースがあります。その中で今回最優秀賞を獲得した株式会社アラヤの演算量削減技術や株式会社エイシング のDBTは別のアプローチでEdgeデバイスへのAIのデプロイを可能としており、まさにマイクロソフトが実現したいことを補完し、共創することで新たなソリューションへと発展するのではと期待しています。
私たちは「Empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.（地球上のすべての個人とすべての組織が、より多くのことを達成できるようにする）」というミッションの元、Imagine Cupの他、クラウドプラットフォームであるMicrosoft Azureや開発ツールを無償で利用できるMicrosoft Imagine、そしてスタートアップ企業を強力に支援するために新しくなったMicrosoft for Startupsなど様々な活動を展開しています。Imagine Cupは今回で16回目、Innovation Dayは11回目をそれぞれ迎え、学生を含む多くのイノベーターとのコミュニティは次の世代をリードする技術のイノベーション、そしてコラボレーションの場であり、今後も皆様の創造性と可能性を引き出すため、支援活動を続けてまいります。
最後に、今回素晴らしいプレゼンテーションを行ってくださったすべての登壇チームと企業の皆さま、ご協力いただいたスポンサー、パートナー様に厚く御礼申し上げます。また、Imagine Cup日本決勝を見事勝ち抜いたチームの、世界大会での活躍を心から期待しています。

Microsoft Innovation Day 2018 was held April 16th in Tokyo, Japan. Many cutting-edge students and startups presented their engineering projects at the event. The event included the national finals of Imagine Cup 2018, the largest global student programming contest, and Microsoft Innovation Awards which honors startup technology innovations.
Japan Imagine Cup 2018 received many innovative submissions, from which 10 teams advanced to the Imagine Cup 2018 Japan National Final. This year we partnered with Preferred Networks and supported students by giving them technical sessions and mentoring.
At the Japan National Final, the 10 teams gave enthusiastic presentations, and 3 teams won the right to present at the World Finals to be held in July in Seattle, Washington.

Use AI to optimize the feeding for fish farmers, reducing costs and improving yield. - Mediated Ear (The University of Tokyo)
Assist hearing impaired by using Deep Learning to reduce the noise in an audio stream, isolating the speakers voice. - Team Emergensor (The University of Tokyo)
Detect emergencies from smartphone data to alert nearby citizens and improve response time, reducing accidents.
The technical level of all 10 team solutions was very high, using advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Mixed Reality, and Big Data. The submitted projects also showed how technologies can be used to improve quality of life.
Microsoft Innovation Awards was also very exciting, focusing on technologies such as Mixed Reality, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, and quantum computing. These are key focus areas for Microsoft and it’s exciting to see startups innovate in this area.

- 1st prize: ARAYA Inc.
Algorithm for Neural Network requiring less computation resources. - 2nd prize: AISing Ltd.
Machine learning AI which works in Edge computing using Deep Binary Tree.
The startup solutions utilized Microsoft’s platform. They extend the possibilities by building new solutions and creating new value to the world. I saw great opportunities to collaborate more with startups technically and in business together. For example, ARAYA’s computation complexity reduction technologies and AISing Deep Binary Tree (DBT), compliments existing AI model deployment to edge devices. Together with their solutions, we get closer to the realization of the Intelligent Cloud and Intelligent Edge.
Microsoft’s mission is to “Empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.” We have been supporting innovators now and in the next generation to achieve more. We support students to think big, explore possibilities, and put their ideas to life in Imagine Cup. Students have access to Azure and Microsoft development technologies through Microsoft Imagine. Startups receive support through the new Microsoft for Startups program.
This year was the 16th Imagine Cup and the 11th Microsoft Innovation Day. It’s exciting to think how long we’ve been supporting these innovative communities and I’m looking forward to what we accomplish together in the future.
